I just got the very first Alpine KCA-420i in florida. Well I got it last week and installed it yesterday. It plugs into the AI net port on the back of the radio, and then plugs into the docking port of a Gen 3 or newer ipod. It supplies power to the ipod and brings the control and display of the ipod to the radio. Out of site, out of mind. It simulates a changer and uses the file function for MP3's to access the ipod.
this thing rocks, search by artist, genre, playlist, song etc.
I have it hooked to the 9538 radio, and couldn't be happier,
Mitch
Here are some pics of the install
My first cool mod. Alpine changer in secret compartment hooked up to factory radio.
New pockect with access hole for ipod wire
placed carpet on the bottom to cover the hole, and keep things from rattling
ipod case...teski.com great case. I pulled the pin on the belt clip and ground down the tabs to give me a flat surface for 3m vercro to hold the ipod in place
ipod in pocket
Wiring harness
Finished amp rack in spare tire location. No holes were drilled. I used the spare tire bolt to secure the rack

Congrats on your install, but first in FL? It rolled out everywhere else last month, even crutchfield, right? Was there some kind of chad-punishment thing that Alpine and Crutchfield wouldn't ship to FL?
Alpine didn't release it to ship anywhere until 9/30. i was trying to get it before my vacation, but no luck. they showed up on the 8th, and i got mine just after then.

I think you are a little confused - not sure where this 9/30 date is from, but I am sure they shipped well before them.
If you look at the date of my post and pictures of the unit in my possesion, it was 9/28 when I bought mine from a local Authorized Alpine retailer; although I was the first to post here on s2ki, several people got theirs a few days before that, some for crutchfield for cheap. So I ordered ANOTHER from crutchfield on the 28th, it shipped on the 29th, and returned my original one.
How is the sound quality when it goes through the head unit? Some MP3's have some white noise or air when I burn them on the CD. Do you get this from the IPOD?
I use the AAc file that is propritary from apple, but if the recording is bad, it will be bad on the ipod. I do have some songs that need to be re-done. Other wise the sound quality is excellent, it not compressed like an fm modulator is, it's a direct input to the radio, it's as good as you can get
