Default Could this be the most trick shift knob ever?

from autoblog.com

We've always been of the opinion that if it doesn't make you go faster, stick better or be safer, it's generally a waste of money. There have been exceptions, but this has to be one of the coolest.

The idea is pretty self-explanatory: on top of the shift knob is an LCD that after telling it the number of gears and, we're assuming, the movement of the stalk, displays what cog your transmission is residing.

Unfortunately, our German is a bit rusty, so when we downloaded the Indy-Cator's directions, we weren't able to decipher how it's programmed. If you've got the means, we'd ask you to check out the company's website and let us know exactly how this little piece of automotive geeketry works.

According to TMTuning, installation is straightforward, the LCD has an auto-dimming feature and it can be yours in blue or red for $169.00. Worthwhile? That's in the hand of the beholder.

THats pretty nice. I like how it matches the red speedo on our cluster.

However, I woundn't be caught dead with one! I'll admit that after owning my S for about 3 weeks I found myself shifting after 6th in search for the mystery 7th gear because the RPM's are pretty high when crusing at 75mph. So far I've gone 3 days without a mistake. Still trying to retune my ear.

I like this. Im seriously going to consider ordering one. The only problem I have is, I put a crapload of locktite on my voodoo knob, so Im not sure if I can get it off.

I hate to admit it, but after 4 YEARS, I still go for that elusive 7th gear....

I also like the "blue" light, which would match my interior.

I'm betting it works by dead reckoning and sensing motion and "calculates" that a rear-ward movement with a sudden stop at the end means you've shifted from First to Second (the next rear-ward gear). I wonder what it will do if you stop in neutral? Or do something silly like wiggle the shifter? I'd be impressed if it could really tell the difference between 6th and reverse.

Could be a simple gyro sensor as well.

Gyro sounds expensive to me, probably G-force sensors. I think it's an interesting concept and I'd like to know how it works, but not enough to actually buy one.
