Default Crappy Head Unit?

I just started the audio upgrade on the S2k. Did the speakers first - Sony ES 6.5s.

With the rest of the upgrade coming later, I figured, I could see just how bad the head unit was....

Has anybody noticed the tweeters on the passenger side are signficiantly muted compared to the driver's? Figuring it was faulty speakers, I switched them... Still the same. Tested the speakers on another S2k - Still the same. What the Hell did Honda give us?

Anybody else experienced this?

From your description its hard to tell. You may be out of phase (i.e. + and - crossed at the head or speaker). Never heard of an ES 6.5? Is it a 1621 or 1631 in the Explode series? Sounds more like an install problem (phase or short to ground) then a head problem.....although the head unit is hugely weak.

utah s2k,

speakers i put in are Sony ES Xplode 6.5s model XS-V1655G. They take nominal power to 50w, peak 200w. looks same as others, its a three way - costs about $175 or thereabouts from places like crutchfield. mounting depth wasn't too much of a problem since I made new baskets, using the orig baskets as a template. Used 5/16 hardboard - worked out well. I was worried that since the mid/tweeter tower extruded out futher than the woofer level whereby it would not fit under the door panel.

Nice speakers - had an identical set on another car and they do kick for 6.5s.

i thought of the out of phase possibility also - so I tried it in and out of phase with no improvement on the passenger side. Since my girlfriend also has an S2K (LadyDDS), I tried her stock unit.... Same type of output on the passenger side. A problem I guess I will have to rectify with a new head unit and an amp...

As far as short to ground, the both speakers will not work any one of the leads are shorted... I may be wrong on that one.
