Dashboard stereo controls...
Awesome!!! I've been searching for that info for the last three days. I have a 7893 that we swapped into the S when I bought it. Really hated to lose the dash controls... so maybe I'll get to have them after all if Circuit City here can figure out how to use that adaptor =)
Well, I've got a 7893R, which is a European model and equivalent to the 7894 here. The regular, US model 7893 does not have the connection you need for the dashboard adapter.
The devil is in the details, as they say.

ahhaha... If Tifosi is reading this, it'll be amusing. I asked him to buy it for me back in April (or was it May?). Anyhow, I got it in October!!!! If I'm not mistaken, you can only get it in Europe.
About a year ago, S2Kman made a module (called a DCU) to convert S2000 dash control buttons to operate the Sony HU's that worked with the Sony hard-wired remote controller (steering wheel remote). But there were lots of programming and reliability issues, not to mention the fact that it cost $100 or more. Some units semed to work fine, others had nothing but trouble, and some buyers are still without a working adapter.
Three weeks ago, I announced in a different thread that I was going to build my own Sony interface, mostly because I have a Sony and my DCU from S2Kman quit working 5 months ago and S2Kman is not fixing them or refunding money, as far as I know.
Today I installed my first test unit, and the S2000 button functions appear to work great. Here's what it does:
Mode - performs Source function on Sony
Channel - changes FM & AM radio bands
Vol Up - volume up (duh!)
Vol Down - volume down
And the volume buttons work just like stock. That means, as fast as you 'tap' the button, the volume changes by one increment (NO delays). If you hold the volume button, the volume changes faster (like the auto-repeat function on a keyboard). S2Kman's DCU did not do this.
And there are extra features too:
Hold Mode, then toggle Volume, you get Radio Preset Up or Down (CD track up or down)
Hold Channel, then toggle Volume, you get Radio Seek up or down (CD disk up or down)
So you get 8 functions out of the stock 4 switches. And of course Mute works like it should. While there are other functions on the HU, I think those 8 functions should cover 95% of your button-pushing.
This is working right now in my car, but I want to test it a while longer AND I want to add SPEED CONTROLLED VOLUME. So hopefully in a few weeks, I will be able to offer it for sale for anyone interested. In my previous post, I indicated cost would be around $50, and it looks like that target will be attainable.
Does anybody know of other HU's that work with a hard-wired remote? My unit may be adaptable to work on other units if I can get details (schematic?). While I piddle with electronics a lot, I'm not in the car stereo business, so I just don't know what's out there.

ByteIt does get my award for 'most patient bloke' 2002 though

CH moves to the next track on CD playback and scans to the next station on radio listening. The mode button works a lot better than on the stock unit too - it just changes from disc to tuner to changer (or whatever) rather than cycling through all the different radio bands
Mute works as the cell phone interupt and so pauses CD playback and also mutes the radio. Volume does the same as always.
