Default DCI kind of works

Hey guys,

I got my Alpine 9831 in this weekend. I installed Modifry's DCI at the same time. Fortunately, it doesn't look like I got one of the weird ones. It works, kind of.

Basically, if I have the radio door down, it doesn't work at all. If I have the radio door up, it works about 1/10th of the time. If I have the radio door down, but I put my hand right in front of the radio, it works all the time. It's almost like my hand needs to be there to reflect the IR transmission into the headunit. I have the little IR eyeball sticking out just below the headunit, more towards the driver side. I've tried scooting it more towards the passenger side, but that doesn't help anything.

Anyone else have this happen? For as much as everyone seems to like the DCI, I can't imagine this is normal.

When you installed the little "eye", is it pointing towards the HU?

I believe the IR receiver for the alpine is on the top portion of the face, try re-located the DCI to the top left corner

I don't really see how you could position the eye so it's point at the headunit. How would you do that?

On the second note, I'll try moving the eye. Do you actually think that will help?

According to the instructions on Modifry's website (see marketplace for link), there's a "business end" of the IR emitter, then there is the back side. The side that actually does the emitting needs to be pointed at the HU in some way, shape or form, otherwise it'll be transmitting in the wrong direction.

Definitely sounds like a problem with the positioning of the IR emitter. With the door closed you get reflections off the plastic, so the IR energy bounces back to the HU. Same thing when you put your hand in front of the HU, you get reflections off your hand.

The location of the IR receiver varies by model number. I have seen older Alpines where it's on the upper left, but my 9827 has it on the upper right. The owners manual almost always shows where the IR receiver is located, look in the section describing either the front panel features or the remote control.

And defintely take a look at at my web site here to get some pointers.
