bomber: upgrade doors and add rears, keep stock HU. That will get you what you just defined.

I wouldn't waste time or money trying to build off any of the MY's stock HU. If you want to add amp, sub, etc. HU is the first thing that's got to go. So making decision up front is most economical since you'll get stuck upgrading to Aftermarket HU at some point.

Hmmm...so if I'm starting a new system, from scratch, should it involve rear speakers?

With a good pair of doors speakers on a nice Aftermarket HU and a good installation I think you could be fine without rear speakers and get what you defined earlier. Its all driven at that point by what products you chose to buy.

Rears, sub, amp from there gets you beyond into "big, boomin' stereo" territory IMO. Starting with just a good pair of door speakers on the stock HU seems logical; this won't stop you from continuing to upgrade HU, rear, etc and you won't have to cover the same ground when you take ole' girl apart (which I don't like to do).

I made my choice based on three main options, assuming you self install:

Quality Door speakers + Brand Name Aftermarket HU = anywhere from $350 to $500 (HU can cost way more this but I didn't look at those) and not too difficult to do
Just door speakers + Stock HU = $100 to $200 and real easy
Front and Rear Speakers + Stock HU = $150 to $350 and, too my surprise, real easy as well

I looked at various combos of HU, amp, sub. Amp and sub I personally wouldn't try to do on my own and it got real expensive really fast. So it boiled down to how much do I want to spend now and am I going to want to put more "stuff" in later. I was pretty confident I was not going to want to put in more stuff so I maxed it out as far as I thought the stock HU could take me. After having done it, I'm definitely confident I'm not going to put more stuff in later - its sound great to me the way it is.

Just my humble opinions....

My preference is for the go-fast goodies, so upgrading the stereo didn't get much attention. I upgraded from a 2001 H.U. to the 2002 H.U., installed Rick's front and rear speakers. The extra power of the 2002 H.U. is *not* a lot, but for me it's sufficient, as I really only wanted to be able to hear the stereo over the noise of my A'PEXi N1's. I can do that now, whereas I couldn't before. But I admit that many of you wouldn't be satisifed with the 2002 H.U. if you're really looking for a better system.

Yep. Kodas fit perfectly with Lucid's 6.5 speaker adapter + extra spacer. The tweeters required shaving down some of the plastic trim around the grill to fit inside the tweeter pod on the door, but nothing too serious.

OK, stupid question, I know...what's the difference between two-way and three-way speakers? Is it worth the price difference?
