i am planning on replacing the 2000 stock door speakers. i have upgraded to rear 3way kenwoods and 2002 head units. do i want 2way or three way door speaaker upgrade?? would prefer drop ins but if lucid adapter works will consider other speakers. want to avoid any unwanted vibration and rattle issues. thanks for your assistance.
Personal opinion, if you're looking for simple, inexpensive, and just more sound, go with the 2-way drop ins.
I went with the Kenwood 3-ways in front and rear, only because I felt like it and I could. On the front, much better and more sound at the same volume settings compared to OEM but, I have a friend (now a former S2000 owner, for him) that went with 2-way drop ins, also Kenwoods, up front (no rear speakers)...when comparing his fronts to mine, the only real difference was mine had a bit more bass and slightly more volume. Of course, the real difference came when I kicked in the rear speakers; no comparison then.
I also used Lucid's door adapters for fronts; no issues with rattles or vibrations at all volumes. With Kenwood speakers, you get distortion, probably because of lack of damping when you get the bass around +4 to +5 so I just don't set bass that high. I could probably take it back apart and put some damping in to fix that but honestly I'm happy with it the way it is. No point in going overboard.
I just thought I'd show you mine. We installed Alpine SPX-177A's 6.5 in the doors and Alpine SPX-137A's in the rear panels. The crossovers will be mounted in the trunk but the fiberglass mount isn't done yet. This is an ongoing winter project. Tell me what you think.
This is before I started:
I had to cut the back of the woofer basket off.....Dremels are great!
I fit the new Alpine tweeter into the stock tweeter pod:
The woofer fit nicely into the door:

And yes I did have to cut a little of the metal away.

Please comment on the install. We ran all new wiring for each location. We used a Pro Audio 4 conductor 12 gauge twisted cable to cut back on having to run multiple cables to one location.
Looks good! I considered doing the same thing with my Adire Koda's tweets, but opted to put them inside the stock pod (with a little modification). What's feeding the speakers?
