factory speaker wire size

S2R... 12 guage... that's serious wire for door speakers. The only reason I used 14 guage was because I am paranoid about some things. I too used a coat hanger which works quite well...

S2R,

14 Guage has more than twice the current carrying capacity of what you needed, especially considering the short distance, but you won't go wrong with 12 Guage. If it's already in the door, consider yourself lucky and move on to the next project.

No, 16 Guage won't handle 75W at full blast, so 20 certainly isn't.

Is the stock door speaker wire good enough for 40 rms? If not what gauge should I use? 16, 14?

Stock wire, no...but 16 Guage should be enough for your purposes. If you think you'll be upgrading in the future, might as well go with 14 and only wire once.

Are there any specific brands of wire that slides through easier than with others (size, shape of insulation)?
