Default finnaly gonna try active setup

after two years of laziness, i am finnaly gonna take neutered sputniks advice and do the active setup.

stuff
mb quart qsd216 6.5" components
pioneer preimer p980
jl 12w6v2 in wlaurent box
jl audio 500/5 amp

gonna send 100 watts a channel to the mid bass and 25 a channel to the tweeters.

soooo, what is a good crossover point to start at for the mid to tweeter? i was thinking of going thru the external crossovers the qsd came with since it allows biamp that way, i would never go below what they think the tweeter was meant to see, but i really have no idea where to start.

advice needed

3k hz, it depends on your crossover slope as well

IMO you can't just take a random number (ie. 3k) and slap it onto any and every setup you see. I think a good starting point would be emulating the specs of external crossovers that come with the components. I know for a fact that MBQs specs are easy enough to find.

Now here's the rub...I don't think the 980 has a 3way active built in. I know the 880 does, but I dunno about the 980.

3K is the starting point. And that's a damned good one.

But, hey, you know more about this stuff than I do.

[QUOTE=Neutered Sputniks,Mar 2 2010, 09:39 PM] 3K is the starting point.

I don't think I know more than you. I think that we're both expressing opinions, and it's up to the OP to decide what to do based on how whose opinions make more sense. There's no need to get defensive.
Ahhh, but 3k is not an arbitrary number.

3k is the crossover frequency for most tweeters. Actually, it's closer to 2.5k, but 3k is safer than 2.5k (trying to stuff bass into a tweeter is akin to trying to stuff a basketball into a pigeon - it's not going to turn out well).

So, as you can see, it is not an arbitrary number.

Ok, since I am heavily procrastinating on the studying, I looked up the exact specs for you.

tweeters: 18 dB/octave, 2.4 kHz high-pass filter
mids: 12 dB/octave, 2.4 kHz low-pass filter

Then I'm not sure what the HPF for the mids are...but human ears are very sensitive in that frequency range, so it won't be hard to figure it out by listening.

Awesome that you have an 880. I love that shiet!! Set it to 3 way mode and give'r! If anything, I would work up from 2.4k, not down. Also give the microphone auto-tune a shot. The auto-tune worked quite well for me and got "close" to what I wanted.
