A speaker can play with a partially blown coil. If adjacent coils melt into each other, it lowers the impedance a bit, but not so much as to make it a complete short.

What are you using for a X-over? I had that same problem a few years ago when my X-over crapped out.

Otherwise, check the impedence of your subs.

Whatever, thanks for your help guys, Ill just let nature take its course. If something is blown, Im gonna kill drive it into the ground.

Potential intermittent connection, probably at the sub connector end.

Also, you could've opened the voice coil. I've seen it happen just as you've said. Basically the magnet is loosing it's strength and doesn't move the VC but a mm or less. Try getting a degausser like you would for a tube television and degause the magnet. 95% of the time, it works. Just a thought!

If it's not the sub, than it could be one of a hundred things in the amp.

very interesting...

don't take this wrong but.... (and this sounds crazy)

with the system powered up try taking a rubber mallet and beating a bit on the enclosure at various locations (nothing too hard, but enough to get some shake). see if you've got a intermittent contact inside... (i'm guessing you haven't opened the enclosure yet?). if a bit of shaking can turn it on and off -- you may have a loose tinsel lead or something... that would be repairable...

or -- William was just mentioning it in another thread elsewhere about having seen fried voice coils from running a DVC in stereo... i've not experienced that as i've always run them mono.

Well....my sub is 100% fine. Nothing is wrong with it. I took it to a shop I know to get a second opinion, and they think its the low pass filter. I am getting the amp replaced by Audiobahn, surprisingly, with no drama. Kudos to them for standing behind their product.

Maybe you should get a quality built, non-bling amp. That'd help in sound quality at least...
