Got RIFed yesterday!
For those of you who don't already know, I became acquainted with a word and an acronym yesterday..."right-sizing" and Reduction In Force. Yep, I was given the boot!
My company (OK, so it's no longer mine anymore) decided to reduce it's work force by 25%...the rest who were "lucky" enough to stay had to take a 20% reduction in pay.
Don't get me wrong, I harbor no ill will towards them, as they were nothing but nice the entire time I worked there. The communications market is just coming out of a slump, and of course it takes a while for things like that to hit the companies. I got a reasonable severance package and I still get my stock options, so I'm not too bad off.
Soooo, anyone out there in the Boston area (would prefer to stay around here, if possible) have a need for an experienced DSP engineer? I've done everything from creating an RTOS for PIC chips to optimizing DSP assembly for various chipmakers, like Analog Devices, Motorola, Texas Instruments, to name a few. I don't think I'll have a problem fiding another job, but it doesn't hurt to keep my ears open.
Anyone, anyone? Beuller? Beuller?
Oh, and I meant to add, my friend Phil was fortunate to join me in this little career move...he was our IT manager, and knows his shit. So if anyone knows of some good IT jobs around the area (he'd lke to stay in Boston as well, if possible), lemme know.
As for the rest of the poor souls...well, let them fend for themselves

DP: LOL, I wouldn't want to be blamed for blowing up a system due to distortion or anything
Socal: I thought I was pretty general, actually. My current...ahem, last...job I was doing VOIP, cellular radio, DSP assembly, etc. One before that was DSP code in C on the PC, image processing, analog signal conditioning, microprocessor interfacing, etc. Plenty of audio design work (duh, right?
), both analog and digital, a lot of image processing owrk on embedded systems. I'm qualified for a lot of stuff...but I want to stay with DSP, and that's a REALLY large field.

Sorry to hear about it, but I very much understand -- We had a 25% cutback 2 weeks ago and I got told to cut 2 people on my team (IT) -- I opted to make myself one of them. So I'm catching up on some writing projects and trying to decide if I want to write full time or go back "inside". But it's a tough market out here right now for IT Directors.
Sorry to hear it Mac and I hope for the best. Times are tough. I've had two companies die out from under me and I'm on forced holiday for week around July 4 (beats two weeks at Delphi Automotive, poor souls). Cool-sounding resume though.
