GPS in s2k?
You should check out this thread if you haven't already. Very slick project - I hope it pans out.
I have the Garmin Nuvi and love it. I had a navtec based nav system in my M3 and the only things I miss are the larger screen and the fact that it started aquiring sattelites as soon as you opened the door, so by the time you started the car up it was good to go. The Nuvi is superior in every other way - fast recalculation, fantasic voice prompting, and (my favorite) find by name. Just type in "taco" and viola - the nearest taco bell is found!
Anyway - I've got mine mounted near the steering wheel for now. I want to come up with something more integrated, though I must admit that I'll miss having it in such an ideal location.
Here are pics of my temporary rig(also found on the above thread)

It's the top piece of the bundled nuvi mount (the part that attaches to the end of the suction cup mount's arm). There was no modification necessary, as that part just snaps on/off. It is just held on to the vent by a zip tie. I sandwiched a piece of foam between the mount and the vent. I can still open and close and adjust left/right angle of the vent via the roller below the vent, but the zip tie makes angling the vent up/down impossible.
Also, the tension of the zip tie isn't too tight since I dont want to damage the vent, so the foam is kind of critical in that it makes the mount more stable... without the foam it would flop around.
If you look at the third pic, you can easily see the foam and the zip tie. I even considered running power through the vent to the back to the mount, as it can charge the nuvi directly that way, but then I saw the other thread and decided I'd much rather go with something clean like that.

I'm using a Palm Pilot with TomTom. I've got a Tungsten so the screen is bigger than say a Treo. I'm in the process of adding a cig lighter power source in the kick panel so I can have it charge while driving. I'm trying to see if I could hide the GPS module in the car somewhere so like someone said above, it could find the satillites while I'm warming up. I might run the cig lighter to a constant power source to keep the GPS module on all the time, but don't know what that will do to battery drain.
i've search on ebay and around that theres a vent mount for the nuvi out...
its bout 25 bucks amazon too...
thinking about getting one because where you have yours mount is exactly where i was thinking..but just a lil to the right because i still want functionality out of my vents.

I've got a Garmin 2720 that I use between my car and truck. I just use the bean bag dash mount. I want to mount it a little better though, becuase whenever you hit a bump it wants to slide off. Granted it just slides a little at a time it's still annoying. Also accelerating hard or turning hard causes it to slide off. Other than that I really like it. I don't use it everyday but when I need it I'm glad I have it.
First off, GPS rocks.
I'm currently using Tomtom 5 and a bluetooth gps receiver with my treo 700P. My treo sits in a holder that connects to the right driver's vent (makes for perfect viewing and easy access). Mounts just like the pictures above. The gps receiver sits in the glove box and is powered by batteries. I charge it once a week. When I leave my car, I grab my phone and I'm out. The bluetooth receiver turns off by itself when not being used.
With this positioning, I have to close the right driver's vent. Blasting super hot or cold air on the back of my phone probably isn't safe for the electronics.
I like this setup most because I didn't want to pack and unpack the gps unit every time I parked. It's a PITA for me. And leaving a $400-$800 piece of electronics on my dash isn't an option, either.
But if you want a kickass gps unit, the garmin nuvi 350 or 360, although astronomically expensive, is the finest unit out there...by far.
I drove across the country with a garmin c330 attached to the windshield to the left of the steering wheel. It's a good unit, but sucked up a lot of heat from being in the sun and I hated having to store it every time I parked.
