Has anybody installed an amp NEXT to the spare tire?
That little space to the left of the spare tire, as you're standing in back of the car looking forward into the trunk... there's a little space... enough to fit an amp physically, although it might not be a good idea because there's almost no ventilation. Is this insane? I'm looking around the trunk for a place to put my new amp. Want it to be as stealth as can be, but also do not want it to overheat and burn the car down.
No, not insane.
I've had a Kenwood 50W x 4 above the gas tank for several years and 100k miles with no problems at all. It fits tight enough the insulation on the tray is pressed against the top of the amp but evidently there's enough air space for it to survive Atlanta summers.
I recently added a Blaupunkt plastic amp in the same place for the sub but don't have a picture yet. Here's the Kenwood:

the only downside is that you no longer have a spare but as i stated i'm running two amps and this was really the only way i could go.. (cross overs are mounted on the bottom) and distrubtion block is mounted behind the amp

^Oh yeah, no drilling...I used existing holes and nutserts. Mine is made from aluminium, but I've seen nice ones in the same place constructed of MDF and covered with carpet. Just make sure to mount low enough to avoid interferring with the trunk spring.
