Has anyone installed MB QUART 2-way components?

I've decided to buy an MB Quart 2-way components, but I'm not sure what's gonna fit in the stock 6.5" location. I've heard that a European made 6.5" will not fit, because the speaker itself is 6.5", not the mounting diameter, like US made speakers. Is this true?!?

I don't mind cutting or replacing the stock speaker basket, as long as the new speaker magnet doesn't hit the window when it's down. What MB Quart 2-way components have been successfully installed in the S2K?

Also, Where did you put the crossover?

I have the Quart Reference Series 6 1/2 components installed (PSC 216, I think is the stock number, these are the high end, not the lower end Quarts). They are excellent BTW. I didn't do the install, but I know the baskets are gone. The installer fabricated new ones, but I am pretty sure you could cut them if you were so inclined. The new baskets really increased the bass response, in fact, I am going to hold off on the sub and see if this is enough bass for me.

The crossovers are mounted inside the door too. Just a personal suggestion, but if you are going to use fairly high end components in your car, unless you are an experienced installer, I'd let someone do it for you. A high end shop, not best buy.

For positioning purposes, the tweeters are mounted slightly above (1 inch) and towards the front of the car from the mid range (about 1 inch infront of the midrange). This set up is great, avoids the problem with the leg blocking the sound and the brigtness that many people expereince with MB Quart components is toned down. With the top down, I haven't heard a better sounding speaker. They are mated to an Alpine head unit and a precison power two channel amplifier running at 2 ohms. Again, I'd suggest going with a high end amplifier to get the best out of the speaker. Just my $.02.

Depth should not be a problem... if my Dynaudio 7" drivers don't hit the window then yours should not either (my magnet structure is quite large).

BTW, listen to the Q Series... I found their 6.5" Q 2-way to be exceptional...

Shaner, how the hell did you fit a 7" Dynaudio in there?! Are you mounting it backwards so the magnet hits your leg, or do you keep your windows rolled up?!

I haven't opened up my door to see the enclosure for myself, but these specs say it's pretty damn close. You don't get any rattle against the stock speaker cover or anything?

This is the dynaudio 7" woofer

Post some pics of your install, if you have any...

Yeah, no kidding shaner, how DID you fit that puppy in there, with a crowbar?! I'f I'm reading that last pic correctly, it says the depth is 6.7" --> 170 mm!!! At that size, I think you'd have to roll your doors, not your fenders
[/B][/QUOTE]

Actually, I think that's 67mm, not 6.7". This just might be possible.....

Some quick 3D modeling suggests that a dynaudio 7" can fit, with about 3mm clearance to any travel point of the window anchor

I had to "eyeball" the shape of the dynaudio basket, but I think it's pretty close to the picture from their website.

According to Shaner, it fits, and my calculations agree..

Only two concerns...

1) Because there is no room to put a basket behind the speaker to create an enclosure, does the sound quality suffer?
2) If the window is at the optimum height to put the window anchor at its closest point to the speaker basket, will a hard bump in the road rattle the window enough to cause the two to contact and rattle?

Honestly, I did have to shave a ring of steel out of the door to accommodate the 7" diameter (which I painted and rubber-undercoated)... as for depth, I mounted the speaker to a 1/2" MDF "ring" I cut out (I always mount woofers to wood) which probably keeps them from hitting the window. The door panel goes on just fine...

Sorry I have no pictures... I installed the door woofers before I bought my digital camera.

Wow, while I was typing djqube was 3D modeling! The woofer sounds fantastic and I get no rattling. While the door is by no means sealed, I did cover the entire door with Dynamat... You know: Dynaudio + Dynamat = Dyno-mite!

Man, I need to get out more...

ACTUALLY, the person who 3D models my woofer inside the door of an S2000 needs to get out more
