Honda Stock Speakers
Executive summary of this long post. Put in the Kenwood xr600s. Put in Lucid's rears. Maybe put in a more worthy head unit. Don't worry. Be happy. It's just a convertible, for heaven's sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, the speakers are straight drop ins.
Kenwood supplies them with what they call a "bi-amp" setup where you can drive the tweeter and midrange separately or wire them together with the supplied wiring. Don't bother with the bi-amp setup. Goldtrom and I both tried it (driving the tweeter from front output and the midrange from rear output -- running extra wires) and it was worthless. The included Kenwood speaker wires let you simply wire the speakers to the Honda wiring.
You do have to tap into the Honda wiring harness near the speakers to install them. The easiest way is to leave the Honda custom wiring plug in tact and get crimp ons that tap into them. This is another buck's worth of parts. My stereo shop gave them to me.
I eventually added heavy gauge wire from the head unit, through the door harnesses, to the speakers. This was also worthless. The Honda wiring harness wires are pretty thin but they are completely adequate for ANY HEAD UNIT. If you're going to add an amp and 50 watts rms power per speaker, maybe you need to upgrade the wiring.
I ran these speakers from the MY2001 stock head for a while and the improvement over the MY2001 speakers was great. Then I put in the Alpine 60 watt x 4 CDA7876 head (27 watts rms per channel), and it was even better EXCEPT at high volume the bass fell apart. Then I added Lucid's rear speakers giving me more midrange volume and making use of the CDA7876's rear amp power, and I'm just about completely pleased. I can listen to music at 80 mph with the top down.
If I make the music uncomfortably loud, I get a lot of bass distortion, but the CDA7876 lets me filter it out. Someday, maybe I'll get a subwoofer, but for now I'm satisfied.
My stereo shop tried to talk me into upgrading the speakers but I didn't.
Goldtrom ended up ditching his xr600s and upgrading, including adding an amp.
Here's the thread where he discusses using his xr600s with the amp and just before he decided to upgrade from them.
