I just installed the Alpine 9847 in the S and last year installed the Pioneer DEH-6700MP in my 4 runner.

I feel the 9847 is underpowered to drive my polk db6500's, but maybe if I were to swap it with the Pioneer from the 4-runner that it would make the db6500's sound better.

What do you guys think?

Alpine has 18W rms
Pioneer has 22 W RMS and a better EQ( I belive).

I could care less how the stereo sounds in the 4-runner since I probably drive it 10% of the time.

The other option was to amp the Alpine and hopefully make the polks sound better?

 

Amp the Alpine...18W to 22W on the HU is not enough to warrant changing them out.....

On amp power..."some" is O.K...."more" is better....and "too much" is just right....

 

I agree, I have the 9847 with Momo 6500's and a low-power amp (for now), and it sounds great.

 

I'm actually running that exact setup, Pioneer 6700 head unit, with Polk db6500's in the doors. I was underwhelmed with the quality so I found myself a 2-channel amp (97 WRMS x2).

Couldn't be happier with the sound, now.

I definetely second the "amp that baby" suggestion.

The db6500's do have a high sensitivity rating, but not amping them is a mistake anyways.

Is there a way to secure the amp without having to drill holes ?

 

I'm hesitant to actually RECOMMEND my solution, but I've got mine in trunk behind the panelling opposite the spare tire. It's in there "pressure fit" and I haven't had any problems yet... that's not to say I'm expecting them, but I guess you never know.

 

I took a piece of wood, covered it in carpet, and screwed it to the rear trunk bulhead. It just fits, and I don't think you'll get away with this unless you get a small enough amp. My goal is to keep the trunk usable, and I need the deep well for stuff I haul.

Notice over the top left corner, that's the trunk rod - it just clears the amp.





I know the current Alpine MRV-F345 will fit here, because I was looking at that amp.

Simple and serves the purpose.

I am trying to brainstorm on how I'm going to go about pulling the wires and what panels I am going to have to pull off.

I'm especially worried about pulling the power wires from the battery? Is there a pre-drilled hole in the firewall?

How did you pull wire from the trunk to the doors?

 

From experince, the differnce in 4 watts is not going to be noticeable. Now if you put go from 18 watts to 75 watts, then thats a big difference. If you can afford and have the technical know how to put an amp, I highly advise it, its well worth the effort, and its a day and night difference. The easiest way to describe it is, hmm, crisp sharp sound and things you never heard in the music before will show up.

As for running the amp power wire thru the firewall, there is a rubber grommet directly behind the battery, you will see the factory wire harness going into it, just lube up the amp power wire with a water based lubricant (ky jelly) and start pushing. it takes a bit of elbow grease, but it will get in.

I went a different route though, I used a clothe hanger, bent the end to a hook, wrapped the end of the speaker wires with electrical tape to the hanger, and then used once again KY jelly to pull it through the doors, its a pain, and its harder than running the power wire thru the firewall, but you have to do it, if your running anything more than 50 watts rms to the speakers, the stock harness cant handle it.
