HU Self Install Instructions?
I'm sure there's gotta be a thread somewhere, but numerous searches couldn't yield one, maybe I'm searching the wrong stuff, but hopefully someone can help. I just got the 9857 (seems popular on here, hope I like it as much as the other owners) but I would like to do the install myself, so that I can kinda figure out how everything goes together so that for future sterio upgrades, I can do the work on those as well. Is there any how-to on a HU install in the S2000? Any additional cables I will need to buy to get the driver controls working? Basically I just want to know exactly what I need to take apart to get the HU in. I plan on mounting my iPod in the "glove box" between the seats, but have taken apart the center console on my '02, so I should know how to get all of that apart fairly easilly.
Thanks for any help guys, and if anyone can recommend replacing any cables that may be poor quality, that would be appreciated.

It's pretty simple...
What you'll need (best of my knowledge):
-Standard (flat-head) screw driver
-Phillip screw driver
-Crimpler and/or soldering gun, heat gun, or heat shrink wrap..all depending what you want to do and what's available.
-Conversion Cable that will plug into the original radio socket. (So you don't have to cut up your original socket). There's two types available. 1. Ones that plug into the original socket but require soldering or crimping at the other ends that will be connected to your Alpine or whatever HU you will use. 2. Ones that has two sockets, one goes into the original socket and the other plug directly into your Alpine HU( this cable/connector's abit more costly, but require no crimpping, soldering or whatever..). You can get either one from Best Buy, Circuit City or other Radio shops.
-Modifry DCI (Dash Control Interface) if you plan to keep your original dash controls. (There should be a link in the S2K market forum) There are also DYI on that there as well.
I use a flat screw driver to carefully pop out the radio cover. Right about the vent, carefully place the flat screw driver between the cover/dash and pry it without messing up your dash. There are 2 clips, I believe holding it on.
After that's out, there are 4 screws that holds the radio unit in place.
Remove them and remove the 2 brackets that's screwed to the original radio and screw it on to the new HU. Just try to compare the two you unit by placing it on top of each other and you'll get an idea of which holes of the new HU you will be mounting the bracket to. Because there are many predrill holes on the new HU.
At this point you may want to connect your Modifry DCI unit if you have one, if not... Simply connect the cable of your choice from the list above and tighten the 4 screw that hold the unit in place and reverse the process and that's pretty much it.
G/L any questions to the post just PM or stated here...Someone or myself will clarify it.

If KERO's description isn't enough I can post some pics after work that I took to do a step by step guide.
Only difference is that I never used a screwdriver, just opened the door and pulled/wiggled it until the bottom clips released then worked my way up. Also there are 6 clips on the radio door and your 06 will have a plug for the pass airbag light that needs to be unplugged.. and you'll want to remove the center console first.

Well I dont know if it's exactly a good thing that I'm doing this, because of the work involved, but I am trying to mount the iPod in the upper hidden compartment between the seats, but because of this, my console is already pulled. I am trying to figure out what all panels I need to remove, and what hidden screws there are to get that whole "glovebox" and hidden compartment pulled out so that I can fabricate a mount for the iPod. Anyone have a how-to on removing that compartment?

You don't need to pull those compartments out to run your Ipod cable. You can reach it in the trunk and save you tons of time and the risk of scratching the panels
Fab the mount outside the compartment and then use double side tape or screws to hold it down. Again there is no need to take it apart.

I wanted to take it apart basically just to be sure that I get everything done perfectly, I have an idea for a really trick mount, but it will only look good if it's perfect, no room for errors..
you want to mount it like this?

if so, be careful with the drill bit.. I scratched it up but I figure I'll replace it before I sell the car anyways, the compartment is cheap.
here's a shot of the wire going through the compartment:

Anyways I have pics of most of the removal, if you want to see specific areas/steps PM me what you need and I'll work on resizing all the pics, etc..
