Default humming noise from radio

Before any music starts playing, I get a humming sound from the speakers. I do have an after market radio with an ipod hookup. It's kind of annoying. Any thoughts to what might be causing it? ( the radio was installed before I bought the car)

You mentioned the humming noise is only noticeable briefly in spaces between songs, but were you able to tell if the pitch of the hum fluctuated with the application of throttle? If there's an amp installed, the problem might be as simple as a ground loop.

No amp, its starts when the car in started and before the music starts to play

Does it make the noise if you disconnect the iPod? If so, it is probably alternator/engine noise, which can be verified (like mentioned above) by revving the engine to see if the pitch goes up and down with engine rpm. You may have to re-work the ground wire or add a noise filter to the power going to the HU.
