If your going to test V-1's only toip of the line product, why didn't you pit it against the real competition; the Passport SR-1? I'll put my SR-1 up against the V-1 anyday. Both are great but from a cosmetic standpoint......I choose the V-1 (ROFLMAO).

When you and I get together we will do that Utah S2K. In the mean time, why don't you order a V1 for testing or why don't I lend you mine and you can do the tests. Or fedex me your S2000 with the SR-1 installed and I'll run the tests up here.

[B]Thanks for reporting your results. I'm already a proud V1 owner and know its Ka detection is quite good... I often driver VERY FAST on hiway 5 from San Fran to LA ( I can make the trip in just under 3 hours for those who know how far it is).

Another thank you for the report! I can see my 8500's suction mount is a POS but I haven't had any practical complaint. It works daily with no "falls" and I remove the detector at least twice a day (at work in AM and at lunch).

Barry,

This is a great thread. Maybe we should send it to Mike V.

Well done!

Incredibly informative from mostly non-partisan users. It sounds like the V1 gives a few extra warnings, but better safe than sorry. Its next on my list for toys to buy. I've had my s2k for a year now without any tickets and I'm definitely long overdue.

I got the Escort 8500 at Best Buys ($299.98 plus 7.75% tax) to prepare for my upcoming drives Irvine to Arizona, Norm Reeves Honda Cerritos Meet, Shinestreet BBQ, Magician meet in LA. Vegas time share get-a-way. Seems adequate for now. Can believe these things are more expensive than DVD players.

barry,

i may have missed this in your long thorough report... but did you have the passport setup to more sensitivity... i think you can turn off the smart circuitry that tries to ignore false alarms... the passport may do better in that mode... but then maybe you already did...

I will need help from a Passport 8500 owner to answer your question. When I set up the Passport 8500, I set each band to highest sensitivity. I don't remember turning off any specific "smart circuitry." If the Passport 8500 has something like that, perhaps I missed it.

The V1 has three "smart modes" labeled as "A" and "L" and smaller "L". As I understand it, these settings modify the X band response. "A" and small "L" respond with maximum sensitivity to all X band signals but only the "A" responds with a loud warning to weak signals. The large "L" greatly cuts the X sensitivity.
