True, dont get me wrong, mad respect and recognition for laurants boxes, they are awesome and a great idea, but i just think they are seriously over priced for that they are if you know what i mean, maybe $175 coulda been right, but i guess i remember being told 225 not sure anymore. But i have taken pics of the boxes to a local custom shop and they claim they can do the same for $80 a box, so either way its all good.
Hey Airtime, can you send me some pics of your boxes?
I just finished building my own box (#2 on the measurements link from the FAQ) and it was a breeze.
Went to Home Depot, picked up a sheet of 3/4 MDF, some deck screws (much better than sheetrock screws which tend to break on you), some polyurethane glue (holds a little better than carpenter's glue), and a tube of latex caulk. Total cost, around $40. (OK, I ended up spending more than that - but I "needed" one of those new 18V cordless drills ...lol...)
Went to Radio Shack, picked up a speaker terminal panel and some 12 gauge speaker wire. Cost, around $30.
Took about 4-6 hours to build the box - my woodworking skills are a little rusty. Tools I had on hand: circular saw, jigsaw, drill, tape measure, square, a couple of clamps, a bevel gauge.
Rather than do the math to figure the angles on the two side pieces, I used the bevel gauge to read the angle and transfer it to my circular saw. Worked like a charm.
Would have been easier with a table saw, but mine hasn't been used in a while and I didn't want to do all of the work to drag it out and set it up.
Glue and screws to hold everything together (counter-sink the screw heads and pre-drill all holes becuase MDF can be temperamental). Liberal use of caulk to seal the inside of the box, including around the terminals and speaker once I installed it.
I put an Infinity Reference 10" in it. I may upgrade later, but for now it sounds pretty good!
Very glad I built instead of bought. Saved some money, had some fun, and feel pretty good about "doing it myself". Now I need to pull it back out and carpet it - no hurry though, no one ever sees inside my trunk anyway .
I'd say that anyone who has ever done any basic woodworking is MORE than ready for this project. Even a newb should be fine, if the proper care and time is taken. I suppose you could make all of the cuts with a jigsaw if that's all you had, with some degradation in the quality of the cuts. Caulk would fix that though...
building your box should be the ONLY way to go....custom to your specific needs and looks....and cheap too. The first one I built for my Yellow S was a full box...then on my Silverstone I simply used a flat panel....the panel one actually sounds better...
actually, i have been working with a bud who does figerglass and we are in the process of making a box similar to that of wlaruents, if all goes well and he wants to put the time into, thus far we estimate prices to be at $100 a box, ill keep updates and post pics when we finish the project
