Default Infinity reference installation

After a lot of red button pushing in halfords I had listened to every coaxial speaker in the place.
I had also been to some specialist audio centres but couldnt afford what was a basic speaker!

Settled on the Infinity Reference 6512si which I understood from searches on here to be a close fit as i'm going to get to original stock on MY99.

I also purchased a PC2-818 lead adapters from nexxia.co.uk who delivered them next day and I have to say offered excellent customer service. these adapters saved me from having to cut the existing wires, sliding over the mounts on the speakers and plugging into your existing Honda plug. nice and easy.

I have never touched car audio before so had hunted for some decent instructions, I found a few but thought more pictures would help for someone about to venture into replacing their speakers.

So here we go...

Part A

Lets look at what we get.. Click the pics for BIG versions.

Big box and a little box..

Lets look inside

Dimensions - apologies for crappy pic, I couldnt get focus.

Close up on the front, back and side

If you are mounting somewhere other than doors here is what the speaker looks like with the grill on.

Installation pics - Part B to follow very soon..

Part B

Took the door card off instructions here and then proceeded to remove the stock speaker.

realising there was no chance the new speaker was going to fit in the basket I removed that too..

This is the basket once it has been removed

and this is what it looks like with the stock speaker fitted in

Time to compare speakers front and back

The new speaker sits 2cm proud of the basket.

The internal diameter of the basket is actually 125mm, we already know the internals of the speaker are 142mm..... Do the maths!

This is not going to drop in as I had hoped

The basket acts as a 15mm spacer (the depth of it sticking out of the door) so MDF time..

I had contemplated snipping at the basket but there would be no basket left!

I just happen to have an 18mm piece of MDF kicking around so draw out the template. firstly I draw round the basket to understand where the holes will be for bolting to the door. I then draw around the mounting ring that came with the speaker.

PART C to follow

Part c

First up drill a 12 or 14 mm hole in the middle to allow getting your jigsaw in easily, start by cutting the centre circle and then proceed to cut the outside. Once done go and offer it up to the door to check you got all of the dimensions correct and then use it as a template to draw and then cut out the second one.

Your speaker should fit nice and snugly inside it

I'm going to take a break now but will come back later to finish this off.
hopefully someone is going to find it useful

Part D

Drill the holes and mount the MDF on the door to ensure it fits good. I used 4mmx30mm screws

Assuming you are happy with the fit remove and then screw the speaker onto your new mount. Then connect the wires (you will see the adapter I bought below - nice and easy). Turn on the HU and have a listen to make sure all working

happy?

OK Fix it to the door....

re hang the door card - Job done

I will be buying baffles to protect the speakers from moisture etc. Luckily no rain at the mo At the same time i will run some foam rubber round the back of the MDF. Appreciate MDF and moisture doesnt agree with each other therefore probably best to give it a quick coat with MD primer too..

Nice Guide Nick.

I would also add that while the door cards are off you might consider added a bit of Dynamatt/Sound deadening to the doors.
the dorrs are very thin and have a tendency to resonate badly when the speakers are upgraded and put out higher SPL.

One thing I noticed when I created my spacers for my CDT's was that I had to counter-sink the back side of the spacer where the 4 factory mounting points were. This was because those green screw bases stick up a fraction of an inch and the whole spacer would sit slightly above the door itself. Maybe that wouldn't make much difference but that's what I did. Also, I made my spacers slightly larger to make sure that I could get 4 screws on the speaker in addition to the 4 spacer mounting screws.

good point re the counter sunk for the green bit - I shall do that with these when I remove for the baffles. Might put a bit of silicon Sealer around it too.

Agreed the spacer in this guide is a bit skinny. I noticed this once I had cut it so made the second one slightly larger

Nice... ...you may want to look into something to protect the back side of the speaker from water. I pulled my Blaupunkts today (1 was grounding out), and noticed a bit of corrosion on the back of the magnet. I am probably just going to paint the backs with an anti-oxidant primer.

Anybody know where i can pick up PC2-818 lead adapters here in the U.S. Should any audio shop carry these?

Thanks,
Tony
