9856 is IR-only, right? So I'd look for a problem with the DCI IR emitter or it's wire.

You can use a digital camera to see if the emitter is working - watch your camera's LCD screen while it's pointed at the "business" end of the IR emitter. When you send a command (other than mute) you should see the IR emitter light up.
thanks for the tip bob!

i tried it this morning coz its been bothering the crap out of me lol.

anyways, emitter works and when i press the mode/ch on the dash, the emitter lights up. but does nothing.

but before i try to cut the wirings again, and reconnect it......what else should i look for?

Woah, the manual says the only remote that works with it is RUE-4190

That's not a standard remote...maybe the standard alpine IR isn't used such as with the lower end HU's and its a diff signal? much like how diff brands use diff codes? Modifry can u elaborate if this is possible?

From another thread
I just completed my install of this head unit along with the IR DCI and an IPOD cable. It was a piece of cake to install, and everything works perfectly. However you have to mount the DCI's IR transmitter a bit further out because of the location of the receiver on the faceplate.
Try pulling the IR out like 2 inches from the HU and see if it works, maybe the HU just isnt picking up the signal

The HU lights up or the IR? If the IR does and theres no indication that the HU is receiving it, try what I wrote above. Pull the IR out away from the edge of the HU and bring it out like 1-2 inches, just so you know for sure that the HU can see the IR emitter

Not to thread jack, but I found an odd quirk with mine again. It only works after the car has been started for a few minutes, and thats only intermittant. For instance, it worked yesterday at 8am and 11pm...but this morning on the way to work, again, all the controls were not functional. Then I parked at work and tried all the buttons and only the volume down button would work, none of the rest I tried the phone cam test and saw the same thing...only the volume down was emitting
