Installed my 9856 + Modifry...only interrupt works
the dash buttons (other than mute) work by providing different
levels of resistance on the dash wire when pushed. (see:
http://www.modifry.com/products/dci/tech.htm)
If only one button works (consistently) , it could be:
a) dash switch resistance out-of-spec
b) extra resistance in the wiring
c) bad DCI
I would suspect (b) if volume down produced an IR signal
but did not necessarily lower the volume, but otherwise I'd
guess temperature-dependent problems, most likely in the DCI.
If you have a multimeter, Modifry tells you how to check
the resistance on the above webpage.

intermittent problems usually are either bad wiring or something
like a cracked circuit board in the dash switch module. bumps
and temp swings cause things to get better/worse
