Thumbs up Ipod & 9857 user question

I was wondering if anyone who has used the ipod and alpine 9857 together, know if you need to have the ipod handy while listening to it on your stereo. I'm thinking of putting it in the top section of the glove box/center consel. So I won't really have easy access to it while I'm driving. Anyone know if it is a good or bad idea? As always, thanks for any input.

You do not have to touch it. The cable charges it and it turns on and off with the radio. You control everything from the radio. I love it.

Allan, thanks responding so fast. I think I will end up putting it up there then. It sounds awesome...is it pretty easy to control and go though folders for songs?

I put mine in the secret compartment.

You only need to touch it to remove it from the car if you use it elsewhere (at work/the gym/etc).

I have the same setup, however, I put my Ipod in the mesh pocket on the passenger side of the tunnel. Totally invisible, and still easy to reach if I want to take it out.

in fact, the ipod is unusable when plugged in. All it does is charge. All functions must be done from the HU when its plugged in.

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies! I believe I will put it up in the secret compartment. I already pulled off the center console, just deciding what size hole I have to drill. Oh, I'm trying to get one of the older forth generation Ipods. Yeah, after already buying my mini disc player, I didn't want to buy one...now I guess I have to. Thanks again everyone! Take it easy,

Rob

took some quick shots of it w/ my cell phone camera, so pardon the quality. i did this last week when i installed the 9857 and routed it through the center area where the shift knob is. pretty straightforward if you know how to take off the panels and such. the only question for me was where to solder/drill for the wire.

9857 shot

ipod shot. note where i cut into for the cable. at first, i didn't know what to do with the cable being bent to connect to the ipod, but i decided to make it flush

Hey arrrmand, that looks good. I actually just finished the ipod cable part of my setup earlier today. I put a hole through the top secret compartment already. But that looks perfect the way the strap holds it in place...hmmm. Haha...I guess since I already drilled I shouldn't change it. Another thing I noted as I was installing my deck, is that it's really hard to get the deck in there with all the wires behind it(dci, car and stereo harnesses, rca cable, ipod cable)...is that pretty much what you guys experienced? I had to pretty much get the screws in to make it go all the way back. I even stuck the dci out to the side on the drivers side. Should I go back in clean it up with zip ties or something?

i had a bitch of a time putting that thing in there... and i havent even received my DCI yet. im not sure if the harness packaged with the DCI is smaller, because i bought mine (to use temporarily) from walmart and it has 2 plugs--only 1 of which is utilized--so it takes even more space.

i could shove the harness down level with the ECU but i think its the antenna plug thats getting in the way
