So, first of all, I'm an idiot.

I called on my warranty for my optima, and it turns out I bought it way before I thought I did and the 1 year warranty was up in October. So it's been sitting on a shelf depreciating all winter.

I was able to get a pro-rated warranty on it though, so I got 1/2 the price of the Optima toward a conventional generic lead/acid battery. I had to pay $18.

Not too bad, but I could have gotten one for free if I had taken the battery in when the problem first came up.

Hopefully this battery will last.

Oh yeah, the guy told me that they discontinued the D51, oh, right about the time I bought mine. Presumably because they all suck balls.

Suck Rusted Pig Scrotums, perhaps?

and yes -- it does seem to be limited to an issue w/ the 51x series batteries.

Pete -- sorry to hear you got the suck on that deal. at least they pro-rated you something. i just got the run-around, and after 3 Yellow Tops, a bill for a WallyWorld special. *sigh*

They have for years. Not the type 51, though. Doesn't matter as they don't make it any more.

I realize this thread is a year and a half old now, but for the sake of anybody searching for Optima information later (as I was):

I just bought an Optima Yellowtop type 51. My local Batteries Plus store told me that these were indeed out of production for over a year, but have recently been reintroduced. Apparently Optima did acknowledge that there were some serious quality problems with early failures, but supposedly they've all been cleared up now.

I bought one of the original yellow optima batterys..
Its about 4 or 5 years old I think...
It was in my other car that had an extreme system..
That battery has been through it all..
I left the car sit for 4 months and just charged the battery up and it was good to go.
Then about 6 months later I let the car sit again for 4 more month and did the same thing.. That battery is a beast..
So far its pulled through so many times.. I love it..

It's the extreme heat and the -20 degree that killed mine, everything beside that was great.
