Default Japanese Sat Nav

Does anyone know if the OEM japanese sat nav unit can work in the UK?

I've searched the forum and done some Googling, and can't find the definitive answer. It always seems that people are having issues getting it to work, but they've heard a rumour its possible.

I've seen a sat nav unit for sale, and i'm mildly tempted to take the plunge, but obviously wont if its completely impossible.

Any links, suggestions or words of wisdom would be very much appreciated.

Jon

I'm afraid it can't. You might be able to fit a different screen (some sort of Android tablet) there and then use Google maps etc.

I wasn't aware there was an OEM GPS unit and thought folks were just cobbling their dashboards. GPS is GPS. Only issue would be mounting and powering it. Of course if the internal software only displays Japanese characters there's a problem reading it!

Frankly if there isn't a hole already I'd not cut one.

GPS is not just GPS. You have the USA based system and you have the Russian system: GLONASS. Some systems use one or the other, some use both. (i.e. Bad Elf) China does not yet have their system operational. When they do, it probably will not be available. At this time, GPS units are forbidden in China. Not sure how phones get around it prohibition.
Prolly transparent to most users depending on location. It is all subject to military control for accuracy. If things get nasty, lots of millennials are going to be completely lost.

GPS is a US Government (DOD) system. GLONASS is a competing system that I've never seen commercial equipment for. Is there some available?

Language software in GPS receivers will affect their use. The various Asian characters baffle me.

If your car already has the dash interface installed, I would remove it and install a tablet that fits. You can run an extra wire to keep it charged. I might be inclined to go with an Apple product so you can use a Bad Elf GPS unit to link. Those are made for Apple stuff (although it links fine to Microsoft and Android) You can download any app you want so as technology marches on, you can stay updated.

If you don't have the interface installed, don't cut your dash. Get a stalk mount to your seat bolt and go with any tablet/note/phone you want.
