JL Stealthbox + JL 300/2 AMP Help
Hey I just recently installed the JL stealthbox to a 300/2 JL AMP. The speaker cannot sound any better but there are some drawbacks.
1.) IT IS WAY TOO LOUD OVER THE SYSTEM! I have a stock deck and components and am wondering if there is a way to lower the output of the amp or the volume of the sub because my stock deck doesnt have teh capabilities. I have played with the amp but no luck.
2.) The cabin sounds perfect but on the outside it rattles like crazy! I was thinking of dynamat for the top of the trunk since the sub is pointing up but want to know some other ideas people have done.
I really appreciate any input to my questions

So you have a stock deck right? How is the amp wired? Line output converter?
If the RCAs (assuming you didn't use speaker level inputs) are connected a certain way, you may be able to Fade it away from the sub.
Have you tried to lower the sensitivity gain on the amp? Similarly, if you used a LOC, you may be able to lower the gain if it has one.
Ultimately, I'd suggest adding a new amp and upgrade the front speakers. Or an aftermarket HU alone may be able to give some more volume to the stock speakers.
I'm sure the experts will chime and correct me if I'm wrong and/or offer more suggestions.

I'm guessing the amp is hooked up to the rear speaker wires via LOC?
You should try playing with the fader control on your stock HU.
I would suggest a new HU at this point. You will get a bit more power to the stock front speakers and better control of your sub. Look for an HU with built in Crossovers, this way you can prevent your stock speakers from playing lower frequencies and be able to play them louder. You should end up with a reasonably balanced sound by lowering the sub a bit. If you are still not happy, next step would be new front speakers and amp.
As for rattles, you need to find out what is making the noise and then take care of it. Do a search for "rattle" if you need more ideas and solutions.
Good luck!

how do you turn down the gain on the sub amp ?
There really aren't too many controls you need to be worried about, but try these:
- on the JL, set "Input Sens" all the way COUNTER clockwise
- set the "Input Voltage" to "high" (you MUST do this when using speaker level inputs)
- Make sure filter Freq is at 1x and filter mode is "LP"
- please see the RED markings on attached image
This will make the amp as quiet as you can possibly make it. While you're back there, you can make sure that the crossover is set up correctly - see all the sections marked in GREEN in the attached photo. The settings pictured below are a perfect place to start - the only one you'll ever want to mess with is probably the "Filter Freq", but leave that alone for now.
[EDIT] I noticed the "Freq Range" switch was in the wrong position in the last pic I posted, so I've fixed that [/EDIT]
....but I would lower the frequency to ~80. When you get around ~100, things start to really rattle. 80HTZ is a bit lower, and less directional. Just a personal preference, though.Put in the CD that has the heaviest bass you will be listening to. Then adjust the gain (going back and forth from the cabin, as it will sound different in there) until it sounds "right." Then adjust the frequency up or down to your liking (nothing below 60HTZ, as below that mark the bass is be non-directional (i.e.-your ears will not know where its coming from). I would stick between 80-120HTZ (depending on music type).
Also check the FAQ section at the top by PJK3 on tuning the sub and the application of the frequencies to different types of music.

ok it just set it to those settings and it is much better.
the only question is i have set it to a little base. Should I put it
to
a.) LOW INPUT VOLTAGE w/ LOW INPUT SENSITIVITY
or
b.) HIGH INPUT VOLTAGE w/ HIGH INPUT SENSITIVITY
is low/high looking for the lower/higher base sounds?
which one is better for the life of the speaker?

I think you want Low Input if you're using pre-amp outs from your head unit, and High Input if you're using speaker level outputs.
I could be mistaken...
Is it still rattling with your adjustments? Rattling less? Are you going to dynamat it?
