Default jl stealthbox not loud. please help!

bought an used jl stealthbox from this board to supply my car with bass but bass is not sufficient. my settings are:

- alpine cda-9851... set at bbe 3, bass 3, treble 1, subwoofer 8
- jl vr650-csi component speakers
- rockford fosgate p4004... lp 80hz, hp 120hz, remote punch bass set at highest
>50w for speakers and >200w for sub
- jl stealthbox with 10w3v2-d6

all these were installed and set by professionals.

if remote punch bass is set 1/3 way then bass is hardly recognizable. the installer left the punch bass at the highest setting because i can adjust the sub with my deck. however bass doesnt sound clean when trunk is left open.

i heard jl stealthbox sounds great even when cruising with top down. in my case, bass doesnt exist in such status.

what could be the problem? please help. your comments and advises are appreciated. thanks.

You won't really be able to "hear" a musical subwoofer like the stealthbox, if its setup correctly. You will hear THE MUSIC with enhanced bass, but the sub is designed to somewhat disappear into the music. One test for this type of sub, is to simply turn it off, and see if the music sounds worse.

What did the installer say, what does he suggest? Ask him how your setup compares to other 10 inch JL subs with 200w amps. Have him measure your 12v voltage at your amp when you have it cranked, to make sure your amp has enough voltage. If you are getting plenty of voltage at moderate to loud levels, then it may be your amp isnt up to the task. If your installer is experienced, he should be able to tell you exactly what is going on.

Also, maybe your line-in voltage from your head unit is low ....

If you want a sub with more raw output, like for dance/rap, I think JL has a different line of subs for that, and other manufacturers do too... This one is designed to integrate into the music, not "be" the music.

Words of warning, the boomy high output subs tend to take up lots of space

Wow that is a good question, Im curious as to how they wired the sub, as it is a D6 (dual voice coil 6ohm) if they wired it incorrectly the amp is running a higher ohm load therefore not pushing much power to the sub.

Well they should know how to wire the sub, but its worth checking I guess.

Have you switched the sub amp off and on, and noticed a big improvement in the music? Or no?

JL Audio makes this driver for compact enclosure applications and quality-over-quantity buyers, not necessarily for raw output. They make the W7 series for high SPL output, thats for the people who dont mind hearing their sub

When i start hearing the sub, I turn the sub output down, I am oldschool and want the sub to basically disappear into the music

How did they wire the sub up? In the end it should be wire for 3 ohms.

Yeah, basically ask them how they wired it. If they wired it incorrectly you may only be getting 25 of the 200 watts to the sub

What about switching it to low/high/low+high? I once installed a Polk Audio single sub (Polk momo MM10 enclosure) which is housed in it's own enclosure in the trunk of my S, also hooked it up to a Fosgate 800a2 amp and I too didn't really notice the bass. I was running a eclipse deck with a yellow top optima battery, monster digital cap, monster 4g amp wires. Only thing it was good for was rattling my rear license plate, this was set at bass only. I'd since sold the deck, sub, and amp. Decide not to go with a system, now it's just lcd and dvd for me. Perfect hearing at my last physical exam with a pretty azn doc feeling me up and down ...

nrgizeman: What are you comparing the stealthbox to when you say it's not loud?
