Default Just installed system....

Hey people-

I installed my 9851 HU last night with Modifry DCI along with the XM tuner and adapter. I also installed my ODca660 components (the mids anyways....tweeters tonight), which needed some 3/4" MDF rings (PIA!!). I also ran all the wires for my amp. My box is in the mail....hopefully here by weeks end.

Seeing as my amp is HUGE (site didnt give dimensions...I assumed it was small because it is only 283WRMS), I am not going to put it on the trunk lid. I am just going to attach it to the floor to the left of the tool well.

I will post pics as soon as its done later today. I do have 1 question. Which wire is positive / negative in the door panels? I assumed the one in the driver side door with the red stripe was hot, and the one in the passenger side door with a black stripe was also hot. I searched for this, and nothing pertinent came back. As I understand, wiring them backwards will not kill the speakers for now, but over time it would (cone is pushing instead of pulling).

Thanks

John

ps-thanks for all the advice on this.....Phil and Dave, you guys are GREAT....mad props....and believe it or not, shifty also helped out a bit (good information too....thanks).

If you're talking about the stock speaker wires, I would strongly recommend installing 14 or 16 AWG speaker wire. The stock wires aren't meant to carry large amounts of current. Don't forget to run the speaker wires down your center console or passenger sill.

Just zip tie the stock wires back into the harness in the door so the window doesn't have a way of pinching or pulling it.

Project- I am not amping the cabin speakers (at least not yet), so I dont think I need any larger wires. The radio only pushes 18WRMS, the stock wires should be good for 20+. Which stock wire is hot in each door? Was I correct in assuming the red and black striped ones were positive?

Thanks

John

Hello again -

Yeah, the stock wires will be sufficient. When you said you had a "huge amp," I assumed it was more than just a sub amp.

As far as the speaker wire colors, I'm not sure. Sorry! You should be able to see the pinout the connector behind the radio when you plug in your Metra harness. Just check what color those wires are and you should have your answer.

this info does exist.... i just need to remember where i read it.

also -- i've seen that amp, i doubt you're going to have room on the left of the tool well to mount it (at least to the floor). you may want to make a mount that will allow you to put it on the left of the spare tire... if you look in the install pictures here thread, there are several people who made mounts that were located in that area. and it shouldn't be too difficult to do.
it may fit where you plan it, but i'd have a backup plan in mind.

Thanks Phil.... I test fitted the amp last night, and it fits like a glove to the left of the tool well. I REALLY do not want to remove my spare (Karma has always come back to bite me in the a$$). When you said that they mounted it to the left of the spare, did the spare stay? If so, I am all about trying something more stealth than a huge amp sitting in the trunk. The amp is 12"x12" square and about 3" deep.

I dont know how people get away with saying that the door speakers are 6.5" speakers! I measured them, and the diameter of the woofer cone is less than 5". The measurement from the inside of the mounting ring of the speaker to the opposite end is only 5". The Honda speaker basket is only 5.5" in diameter. And the diameter of the speakers, from outside to outside is barely 6". I dont know if mine are smaller because I have a MY00 or what. It was a PIA to make those MDF rings (Dremel's SUCK by the way) with a Jig Saw (faster than Dremel). They are now in and . They sound GREAT. The only problem I am running into is the S-pods are vibrating pretty bad at any high volume + bass. Is there a way to better seal these?

I ordered a custom flush mount MDF and fiberglas box off of ebay for $150 shipped. I think it was shipped today (tracking number valid, but non info as it hasnt been picked up / delivered to UPS yet), so it will probably be a week or so until I get the amp and sub fully installed.

Thanks for the link...I actually have them wired backwards.....gotta fix that! Also, where do you recommend I put the x-overs? I figured the doors, because the stock speaker wires are electrical taped to hell and back, and that would be a PIA to cut all the tape, run wires back through doors, then re-tape everything. I was thinking the interior of the door panel. Where do you recommend in the doors? To avoid water and the window.

Thanks

John

speaker size is measured based upon the flange size, and not speaker diameter. so, yeah, those 5.5" measurements are consistent w/ a 6.5" speaker.

mounted to the left of the spare (they had pictures) involved making a piece of MDF, and mounting vertically to the back of the trunk, then mounting the amp to it... i'll see if i can round up a post/picture for you.
check this post by InsaneInNC out and a couple of the ones below it.

regarding the crossovers? mine are in those little black 'buckets' in the door panel. i've had no problems w/ them in there at all, and even checked them when i last had the door off. no sign of rust or anything.

(wow, looking at the installs thread, i need to update my pics and such, as my system has had some changes of late...)

Phil-

I mounted the x-overs via zip tie to the tubular structual member inside the door. I figure it is outta the path of the rain if I put it out away from the side walls. I thought about mounting the amp vertically to the left of the spare, as a buddy of mine has a job at a welding shop and could get me one out of aluminum. I decided against it, because when positioned far enough back to not interfere with sotrage, it was in the way of the trunk springs. I figure that as long as I do good job of hiding the wires under the trunk trim, I can set stuff on top of the amp (not smothering it, of course).

The system sounds AMAZING! These Blaupunkts sound better than the Reference series, to me. The bass is a HUGE improvement. The soundstage is also MUCH higher and I no longer have a problem with distorting the sound horribly with my knee! The tweeters were positioned under the A-pillar trims, and were point back toward the driver, instead of up driectly at the window. The 1" tweeters sound AMAZING! The sound was a bit bright before I set the treble and bass levels on the HU.

I got confirmation that the box is enroute. Hopefully a week and it will be here and I can finish! (The trunk I am going to leave wired rough until the box comes in, and there are a lot of loose wires back there.)

The XM radio is AMAZING, when it is coming in. We have a lot of canopy and semi-canopy roads here in tallahassee, so the branches kinda get in the way. Dropped out 12 times on my way home from work (not for more than 3 seconds each time). It may also take a few days for the signal to strengthen. It will come in handy on road trips.

I ran the power and RCA lines together on the passenger side. I will wait until the amp is hooked to the sub to test if there will be any interference. If so, I will move them then (total of 8.5 hours on the installation.....but me and friend did it all).

Thanks

John
