Default Kenwood HUs

I haven't been able to find too many people here with Kenwood experience but I did see a thread saying that some kenwood HUs have problems with the stereo door that comes with the S. Is this b/c of the folding face?

Also has anyone used a Modifry with the Kenwoods, preferable newer models? Any issues?

I also notice that some kenwoods use are rear aux input. Anyone use this for Ipods?

Thanks in Advance.

I have the kenwood x889

Great head unit. When I changed the HU, the stock speakers were so incredibly high and clear after I tweaked the crossovers and adjusted a few other settings. I heard a batch of Kenwoods' models might have a problem opening because of the location of our radio.

I had a top of the line Alpine previously and this HU is toe to toe with it.

I have the MP-628. This has the LCD display with the adjustable angle face. I don't have any problems with the door . If you select the greatest angle when you close the door it can hit the button that detaches the face. You can see the HU fine with the first or second amount of angle. The LCD does get hard to read if the sun is coming from directly behind you.

I have a Modifry DCI that works just great but I believe that there are 2 different IR codes for the kenwood so you may need to talk to Bob to get the right one.

I guess you can use the aux in for an IPOD but I haven't tried this. The newer HU are compatible with Kenwoods own Ipod interface which I believe will allow you to control the ipod using the HU controls or (probably) a DCI. The DCI lets me control my music keg which is similar.

I have the X789 but no modfry add ons.. The HU rocks with an upgraded door speakers from infinity. The HU door stays out for optimal viewing and if you wait just that 3 or 4 seconds after powering down, it fits flat and you can close the door

Good to hear about the door not being a problem.

I'm probably going to get the Kenwood 7028 or the 589 from etronics.com this week with Kenwood's adapter. My local shop wants $190 in labor to install the HU, PAC, and ipod adapter so I am leaning on doing it all myself instead substituting the Modifry for the PAC. I'm thinking it should take 1-2 hours.

I'm thinking now I should get the Ipod adapter and use the dash controls rather than using the aux. Phase II will be the speaker upgrades and the actual ipod(hopefully with the student discount).

Mcoto is right about the Modifry DCI for Kenwoods....the new models have a different IR codes but there already is an update for the DCI.

I have the PAC and like it ok....it restores the dash functions.....but the DCI is easier to hook up, has more functions and is a better product.

Good luck!

I've got the KDC-MP425... gunna get the DCI soon as well as aftermarket speakers. The door doesn't have a problem with this stereo (even though it is REALLY close, I was worried while installing it) in my car, but the display is kinda hard to see with the top down and the sun out since it isn't angled up.

So did your all buy your Kenwoods online or locally?

I ask cause there is a big difference. E.G. the KDC-MP7028 lists for $190 at hookedontronics.com and $300 if I got it locally or through Crutchfield.com. 57% extra ($110.00) seems like a lot extra to pay for just for the assurance of getting the one year warranty.

I bought mine at Crutchfield, but it had been a long time since I had done any car electronics and I knew that crutchfield would have easy to use instructions etc. Plus my credit card (chase Platinum) has a low price guarantee that will (with some effort) refund me the difference of a lower price.

That being said. I have bought tons of stuff from a variety of mail order/ on-line merchants and I have generally been satisfied. I'm sure if you do some research you can figure out who to avoid (most problems involve poor delivery and return policy and NOT faulty products). Most products come with a 30-90 day warranty. You can almost always get your warranty enforced regardless of where you buy it from as long as you are willing/able to negotiate your way through corporate customer service (remember to be polite and persistent).

In your position I'd save the $$$, but I'm a cheap Just remember that you typically trade service and support for the cheaper price. You may want to find a low price store that people trust (I believe there is a list somewhere) and see if they can match or beat your hooked on tronics price.

If you are going to get a DCI I recommend you buy Modifrys wiring harness so you don't have to splice into any wires. So save yourself the $$ and don't get a harness anywhere else.

Good luck

What crossovers? Do you have external ones with an amp, or does the Kenwood have them built-in?

I have a Pioneer with stock speakers and it sounds great. No crossover (except going out to a sub) but a 13-band graphic EQ built in.
