Default Memphis vs Boston Acoutics

Hi, all,

My new Boston Acoutics amp sounds a little "veiled" to me compared to the Memphis I had in there. Anyone ever do this comparison? Anyone have a frequency response chart of these? The BA amp sounds to be a little "peaky" in the 3K range, while the Memphis sounded smoother and more "open" to me.

Hmm..I may have to get another Memphis and sell this one....but I have not decided yet....

Thanks, Mike

If I do, I will.

i've never listened to a memphis so i can't really comment at this time. i have listened to numerous BA amps though and have always been extremely pleased, thus my decision to pick up a GT22 myself

Nicotunes, do you have any pics of yours installed?

Thanks for the reply, formulaofsuccess. Sorry for the delay, I will try to take pics soon

Another theory: The strangeness MAY be caused by front speakers out of polarity with the rears. I need to swap the + and - on both front speakers and see if it is better with the rears.

Currently, with ONLY fronts and sub, it seems clean. With only rears and sub it seems OK. Everything together sounds a little weird.

Of course I will also have to check absolute polarity i.e. even if fronts and rears match, they may ALL be reversed.....

Stay tuned.

Mike

This would cause a wierd sound. Not sure what it would sound like, but instead of hitting on the in stroke, the magnet would be pushing instead of pulling. That would cause something out of whack. I have heard that you can possibly blow speaker by doing this while amping the signal.

Hi, John! It sounds "veiled", not clear. This is caused by comb filtering (the simultaneous boosting of some frequencies and cancellations of others). When I fade all to the front, it seems to clear up.

If you are running rears, try putting the passenger channel behind the drivers seat, and vice versa. That way you have one channel hitting you from the front, and the other from the rear. Little to no cancellation (that I can hear). I had the same problem when the rears were properly aligned. Try that.

Maybe it would be easier to switch the fronts, as those are the amped ones, and you dont have to pull the radio.

I made the previous suggestion based on the fact that you thought that the polarities were mis-aligned. This can kill a speaker (I have seen it done). When it hits a big bass note (in distortion volumes), instead of pulling to the magnet, it pushes away from magnet, sometimes ripping the surround.

That GT-22 is only a 2-channel amp, right? Maybe it is the filter in the HU, since (i think) your rears are running off that. HU filters are usually no where near as good as external amps, thus why everyone runs external amps if they want great SQ and volume.

Hi, John,

Are the rear connections on the back of the HU RCAs?? I hope so then the polarity swap if any would be at the speakers....MUCH easier

I don't think I want to swap L & R for the rears...this would mess up the soundstage for me. Eddie Van Halen would both on BOTH sides!

I will swap both + and - outputs of the amp and see what happens.

Thanks for your help!

If polarities are all correct, I guess this could be a time align issue between the F & R. I still have to run the AUTO TIME ALIGN in the Pioneer....
