Default More wire questions.

Well I have been playing around and I have run into one more little problem. How do I connect my wires to my darn speakers. They have the little tabs but is there a better way to connect them.

What style of solder should I use if at all. And if not where can I get quality connecter and the like. I would love to connect them with solder if it would work the best but I need to know what silver content and style to use.

Also there are some new types of helix style wires that seperate the highs and lows into each wire so they get to the speaker at the same time. Cool huh.Maybe it's not worth the money but it sounds cool.

OK, first things first...you do NOT want to solder your wires to the speakers. Unless you're working on a speaker with a huge voice coil (e.g., subwoofer) and you have plenty of quick soldering experience, you'll end up applying too much heat to the connections and coil...not worth the hassle. Use spade connectors which can be found at any Radio Shack, Home Depot, Lowes...hell, even K-Mart and Wal-Mart have them in their automotive sections.

Second, should for some unGodly reason you decide to solder them anyway, you don't need to worry about silver content. High silver content solder is used for jewelry repair and certain types of electrical work, but it's not necessary here and you'll just end up wasting money. Go for the standard 60/40 stuff found at any RS, KM, WM, etc. listed above.

Third, don't EVEN get me started on how completely worthless all those "special" wire types are. The human capacity for hearing starts to notice subtle differences in phase on the order of 100s of microseconds (but not really discern consciously), and can actually discern a conscious difference when things start to hit the several millisecond range (faint echos in sound start to be audible around 10-15 milliseconds). The phase difference we're talking about here is on the order of femtoseconds (10^-15 seconds)...at BEST! We're talking distances of only a few feet, not miles here, and helical wires aren't going to do JACK to the signal at audio frequencies (I'll discuss this agaiin if audio frequencies ever extend into the GigaHertz range ). Save your money and put it towards an amp.

Cheers!

Trust me I got amps out the wazzzo. That wire was like 2 dollers a foot for the 14 gauge. No way in world was I going to pay that.

I can micro solder or at least I could last time I checked so I have no trouble with it. As for the silver content comming fro the RC world where every once of power counts it just sticks in my mind all the time.

I am just fixing stuff my installer should have done right the first time but never did. After I finish this it's time to find a fibergalss box that will match my speakers. I am having trouble finding all of the spec's for them right now. I need the max movement and some other numbers for the 8W0 JL's I am not tring to win any contests with the car and they provide more then enough sound for the volume I listen to my music to. A while back I had a dual bandpass box built for them and lost my spec sheets so I am off on the hunt again. Thanks guys I need all the help I can get right now.

I am off to tear apart my car agian. I really enjoy this.
