thats lame. what if u get a sony head unit that has a screensaver?
As for lame - I think the law is poorly defined, but I have had SO many close calls with Soccer Moms in lifted SUVs talking on their cell phones, READING, putting on makeup, causing them to "share" 5'+ of my lane, run red lights in front of me, etc... I am firmly against distracted driving. As part of that I personally don't want someone watching TV while driving their weapon, and being able to change it to NAV when pulled over is too big of a loophole.
Just my opinion - YMMV!

PS - NFRs2000NYC, laws aside, like I said originally, I still think it is a Nice install.
PPS - Another aggravating law - they go after lowered cars like crazy, but I have NEVER seen a lifted truck getting hassled - who is more dangerous?

w3rd!!! whats ymmv?
aka, the opinion held our is subjective, others reading it may have a different perspective/opinion, diversity is cool.
My opinion is the opposite.
Technically, as the statute is written, a Garmin GPS unit on the beanie bag running off of batteries could be considered illegal since it is not "installed." I would argue that connection to power in the car, the wiring of the antenna and the permanent mount would constitute installation, even if the device is portable. In the exclusions there is no exception for "a GPS unit that is also capable of displaying entertainment or business applications." It just says GPS display is excluded from the statute.
My gut is that this law was designed to keep people from watching porn in the car, but that didn't work because now they just listen to it as it plays in the back seat and the person behind them gets to watch it.
I read some article about a soccer mom with a bunch of kids stuck behind a guy in an SUV who had the rear DVD player on some anal butt muncher porn in...

? The way it has been interpreted here is that all dedicated GPS units are allowed, even bean-bag ones. All displays that have an e-brake lockout (which permits NAV etc) are allowed. It's not the install, it is what it can display that counts.
NFRs2000NYC: Do you ever have passengers in your car????
Maybe I'm totally missing something but with your setup and screens, is there even room for a passenger? What about theft w/ top down?
IMO, that looks more like a police car with their lap top computer mount!
I know you do a lot of audio stuff on this board but just curious.....?
Been thinking about doing a DVD / Monitor setup in my S2k for a while now but haven't come up with a good solution since I never put my top up and want the system to be low-key.
