I had an Audiobahn amp and sub installed today @ a shop, bought used.

Here's exactly what was installed:
Audiobahn A3201x Amp
- 300 watts x 2 @ 4 ohms stereo
- 420 watts x 2 @ 2 ohms stereo
- 840 watts x 1 @ 4 ohms mono
12" Audiobahn Sub Aluminum series
-1000 watt
New 8 gauge wiring kit

With me watching him install everything the entire time, he concludes by telling me the subwoofer is blown. The sub makes a high pitch "BEHHHH" noise when on low voltage and when he tried to tune it. He ran the power along the passenger side and everything else thru the center console also.

There's no fuse b/c he took it out so that the amp won't turn on, but i'm running a 80amp fuse

we checked the sub and nothing is torn or broken from we can see. do you guys have any suggestions of what i can do/check/try? or is it pretty much blown?

Let me get this straight...you had an installer put in a bunch of equipment, at the end of which he tells you one of the components is shot. If he thinks it's shot, don't you think he should replace it?!

It's a fairly simple check for the coil, and any half-assed installer should know how. Use a DVM and check the coil resistance. It should show a couple of ohms...if it shows infinity the coil is blown, and if it shows near zero the coil is fused.

Subs are not really capable of making high pitched noises, so something else is making that sound. Unless you're neglecting to tell us something, your installer sounds like an idiot.

how do you know the amp works fine? did you test another sub?

also, can you try testing your sub on another amp?

first though - do what Mac said and use a multi-meter to check each coil on the sub for proper reistance.

finally -- can you provide a good shot on the mounted amp? is it mounted onto the metal frame of the car?

i agree w/ Mac that subs don't normally make higher pitched sounds... do you see the sub cone moving?

everything else (based on what you gave us) sounds and looks good.

 

the amp has a thick layer of rubber material on the bottom and was tested on the carpet of the car, not inside the tire well.

everything on the amp powers up, but i haven't tried testing on other subs or vice versa as you stated.

and good to know the amp isn't trying to ground out via the case...

yup... i'm more apt to suspect an issue w/ the amp vs the sub. definitely check it on another sub.

 

ok. sub is blown, one of the coils is not even connected the actual speaker

amp works fine, sold it to a friend today and hooked it up. works like a charm.

update.

amp is fubared also. keeps blowin' fuses and overheating. so i guess it was the sub AND the amp

well, if you have a loose voice coil wandering around inside the sub -- that could make a high pitched buzzing for sure...


and are you sure that the sub is at fault for overheating and blowing fuses? that can happen when it is improperly installed... (primarily if it's being used to run too low of an impedence load)
