Default navigation and headunit question

I Just installed my new headunit the other day i installed the alpine iDA-X305S.
I know you can control your iphone from the headunit completely but .... Is there anyway in hell to control the iphone from the iphone? When I click on ipod (on my phone) it just says device connected and the only way i can change songs/playlists/etc.. is from the headunit itself.

also I'm pretty sure i've seen people with a headunit and navi with that said I really want to install a navi into my dash. I dont understand anything about this stuff though. Like does it need to some how be compatible with the headunit or something? or is it just its own thing?

What would be a good unit to buy ?

Not with your head unit unless you only use AUX in instead of the iPod interface. If controlling the iPhone/iPod from the device itself is a priority then make sure you have this on your shopping list when you're doing the research.

Depends on what you decide to go with and how you want to integrate it. It can be stand alone or it can be integrated with your head unit.

Define exactly what you mean by "good". List out your requirements and prioritize them. Specify your budget. One person's "good" is not another's. Otherwise we'd all have the same identical systems in our cars.
