Default Need help with amplifier selection

Hey everyone. I'm getting in on that 12" box/sub group buy. The sub I'm going with is the JL 12 W0. The guy organizing the group buy is recommending that I purchased an amp w/ 300 watts RMS power.

Can anyone please help me find a good amplifier for this sub, under $225 USD?

I'm lost when it comes to amps.

Thanks very much in advance!

do you know the imepedance of the speaker? it might be 4ohm, or Dual 4ohm or Dual 2 ohm? That will help in making suggestions.

4 ohm

It can be 2 ohm, but they're wiring it up for 4 ohm.

so it's a dual 2 ohm that they're wiring into a 4 ohm load? that's a pretty good load to use, lots of choices. anything else you have planned for the car? new front speakers that you might want to power? new head anything like that?

Nothing wrong with using a 300 watts RMS amp to power a 125 watt sub (as long as you set the gains right), but a 175-200 watt amp (or even an old 100 watt RF Punch that fits in the spare tire!) would be sufficient, IMO.

I actually ended up talking to a good friend of mine that knows a fair deal about amplifiers.

I ended up going with this one from Xtant - http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/XTAA3001T

150 watts RMS, and my friend figured they underrate their amps a bit. I actually went to JL's website and found a great chart that recommended much less than 300 watts (rms) for this sub, so I think this will work well.

What I plan to do is setup all of this, and if the subwoofer out performs the speakers that badly, then I'll buy a new head unit, move my slightly upgraded door speakers to behind the seats and buy component speakers for the doors.

It's going to be a big, slippery slope. The way I like 'em.
