Default Need help choosing speaker/amp setup!

Hey guys, I need a little help. I have a 2005 S2000.

I'm not really looking for anything too expensive, just something better. I'm looking at getting the Polk Audio db6500 and I need a little help picking out a good amp. The Crutchfield rep recommended the Alpine MRP-F250 or the Rockford Fosgate Punch P3002. Any recommendations? Different speakers? Different amp? Any advice? (Please be nice! )

Thanks!!!

Go and listen to the speakers yourself. Many people rave about the Polk's but I disliked them.

some things to think about with amps:
1) where do you want to mount it - are you willing to sacrifice
trunk space, or do you need one physically small enough for
a stealth location?
2) do you want room to grow, meaning do you think you might
add rear speakers or a sub driven off the same amp?

many people will tell you not to bother putting in an amp without
changing the headunit, though it seems to me you can try it and
see if you're happy with it. the problem is wiring an amp is a
bit of a PITA, (swapping headunits & speakers is easy), so plan
it carefully so that you won't need to redo it if you want to change
your headunit. for instance, the easy way to wire an amp to the
stock headunit is to use an amp that accepts speaker-level inputs,
but if you change the headunit you'll want to run RCAs, so it may
be better to use a separate line output converter (LOC) at the
headunit, and run RCAs to the trunk.

Thanks for the comments. I'll definitely listen to the speakers before I commit to purchasing them.

I was speaking to a Crutchfield rep again (heh..) and she recommended a Profile AP600 amp. The amp has speaker-level inputs for my stock headunit (which I don't plan on changing) and according to her, is good for the money. It also has a 3-year warranty as opposed to the 1-year warranties the Alpine and Rockford offer.

With the amp, I was thinking of mounting it in the trunk on the left of the spare tire. I'm not looking to expand to more speakers or a sub. Just a simple speaker upgrade so I don't need anything too complicated or 'advanced'.

I'm under the impression that most aftermarket speakers will need an amp (so any information on whether I -really- need it would be helpful). I understand wiring an amp is a PITA, so I'm going to plan everything out to detail and if it looks too complicated, I might just as well find an installer.

Thanks!

Wiring an amp is a piece of cake. One power wire to battery, one ground wire grounded to chassis. The remote wire can be ran from the fusebox's "radio" fuse. Then all you need is either an amp with speaker level inputs or a line output converter to convert the wires running from the headunit to the speakers into an rca output, and just run that to the amp.

Then just run speaker wire from the amp to the speakers and you are set

Well, runing wire can be a real PITA, and if you are ging to put an amp in your car, you'll need to remove the head unit, so you really should spend $200 on a good HU since it will be out.

Barring that, the db6500s don't need to much power, and if you have no sub, you could get by with not much power at all. I had an old Alpine MRV-F301 (~40W/ch) for a while powering my MMC 6500s and it worked great.

The downside to keeping the stock HU is all the noise and distortion from it will be amplified and you'll hear it better with your new speakers.

I got an Alpine 9857, DCI, hardwired Ipod cable and db 6500 with db 525 rear panel speakers. Im using an Alpine MRP-F450 70Wx4 RMS amp that i got online for $199 new. Install is tedious, but plenty of info here to make it doable for the ave bloke. Save the money you would spend on installation and do it yourself. That gives you more $ for componnents. Hold bk $20 and become a member of S2Ki!

While the high level inputs on the amp are a nice feature, they generally (in my experience) require shielded speaker wire to avoid noise. You might be better off just installing a line level converter at the harness and running rca's to the amp. As for speakers, I went with the diamond d361 component set and I love it. Good luck man.

Like others stated, without a nice headunit, the stock headunit's aweful sound will be amplified, and you will hear it clearer. This has been proven tons of times by members not being happy with their sound.

An alpine 9856 is about 175ish on ebay.

Here are your polks for $160.....saves you a few bucks.

6500s

Or you might like these Infinitys..... they are 2 ohm, and very sensitive...meaning, easy to amplify...

Kappa 60.7

For amps....any of these are good and high quality....

Hifonics ZX4000

Infinity REF7521A

Soundstream TRA340.2

Soundstream XTA480.2

Diamond Audio D3400

HEADUNITS:

9857 If you feel like spending a few more dollars for a pretty screen and a wired DCi option..

9856 Free shipping too!

Wiring:
Amp Install Kit

Although the kit comes with RCAs, buy these as well for 100% pure-distortion free sound...

Krystal Kable
These are 4 meters. You can buy 6 if you want some extra slack...

That should be all....

I will be your installer....Ill give you my number, and walk you though it.
