Default Need Help on GPS Information ... i.e. CD vs. DVD

Okay, I've already got the screen in my dash and dvd player but would really like to get GPS nav...anyways, of course the obvious answer is that the DVD will be better but i have a chance to get an Alpine CD Nav. unit for $550 including a 5 year warantee from GoodGuys...as opposed to $2,000 for the DVD unit... I need info. on the differences and general opinions as i am not rich.. I really appreciate any and all info... p.s. please don't ask me to post pics. of my dash, i'll do that soon
Thanks
-Chris

Click here for a map showing how the CDs are divided between regions. This example is for a Pioneer system but the database is the same for an Alpine system. From the map you can see that you are in Map 3 for Missouri. If you find that this is enough coverage for you, there's no reason to pay extra for the DVD coverage. My guess is that buying and updating a single CD is cheaper than doing the same for the DVD coverage. If you need coverage for the neighboring states, just buy those CDs as you find a need for them.

I might be able to shed a little light on this subject for you.

The Alpine CD NAV unit is discontinued. As you know the New unit is DVD based. The only thing that would concern me about this is how long will Alpine continue to make update CD's available? And YES you will need an update eventually. Already after a year ,my DVD disc is somewhat out of date, all the Exits on the interstates just changed around me (bummer).

The DVD model has a few advantages over a CD based system.
As you know a DVD can hold a tremendous amount of data compared to a CD. The entire US is one one side of the DVD and on the flip side is Canada. Although as Scooby pointed out buying only what you need (if you don

Buy a garmin Color map portable and take it from cara to car and into rental cars. It uses CD and down load into a memory chip. works great and you can updates for ever. They hace different models to choose from. I have 3 models for car and outdoors. I Have used it on vacation and business trips and it kicks butt.
