No need for rear speakers
I have indeed tested the use of rear speakers in my vehicle and they are indeed necessary. I am running a high powered Alpine amplifier on 6.5" Infinity Components in the doors, and 5.25" components in the rear.
With just the fronts hooked up the volume had to be turned up much higher to get the same sound volume with 4 speakers. So by having to turn the volume up higher you are making the front speakers work harder which could cause them to blow faster, and they are not as clear. So we hooked up the rear components, and not only did it add a bit more highs, but the volume was increased, and the overall output is incredible.
The amp and head unit have been fine tuned and the sound can be turned up to just as high as youd like without any distortion. I utilized factory speaker locations(the rears should be factory), and did not hack the vehicle. The infinity components fit right into the holes without any cutting etc.
So in conlusion, go with front and rear speakers just like almost every vehicle in production comes with. Head units have front and rear channels for a reason!

Not trying to be too diplomatic here, but our personal senses are quite unique to the individual... Good sound, taste, color, etc is entirely dependant on the individual, their chemistry and their unique neuron firing-patterns. Sure you can measure frequency curves, S/N, etc but what a person calls "desirable" or "pleasant" is completely up to that person and how their biology works.
BUT before you knock something, you've got to try it... so try the rear speaker install before you say it's not necessary or "unpleasant"... I tried it first before declaring it uneeded and a distraction from my stellar front stage.
People, you've got to get along!!! Respect each other!!!
Last thing: It's my dash. If I want to cut holes in it, it's my dash!
