Default No stereo when cold

I have an odd situation. I have had my car since 2000 and installed an Alpine 9813 soon after I bought the car. What I am going to describe is something I recently discovered but may have been an issue for awhile since I seldom drive the car when it was very cold out.

in the morning I turn the car on and the stereo does not come on. I drove to a couple of stores (5 minutes) and still nothing. I then turn the heat on high for a couple of minutes and the stereo come to life. I drove back home and put the car in the garage. I checked it a few times during the day till about 9pm and the stereo turned on. This morning I checked and nothing.

This has happened a couple of times now.

Since in the past I have not driven the car when it was below freezing this might not be new. My guess is if I turn on the car when it is warmer the stereo will work.

Anyone heard of a situation like this? I may just leave it as it is since I typically don’t drive it when it is very cold out.

thanks,

jim

OEM CD player?

Off the top of my head, the first idea depending on age of stereo and temperature is it's possible some solder joints are cracked and no longer connecting until the unit heats up a bit.

Thanks,

No, only CD player is internal in the Alpine.

the only thing that makes me question if it is internal to the stereo deck is that so far it does not take much to warm it up enough to work. If it were something inside the stereo I would think it would take awhile for the warmth to penetrate the metal casing.

It's prolly a poor connection, somewhere. Metal shrinks ever so slightly, when it's very cold. So the hinky connection doesn't work. Then, as the car warms up --- contact is good enough to work.

I'd try using DeOxit D100 on all your plug-type Molex connections. See if that helps the problem. If not, it could be a cold solder point within the unit, itself.

Thanks, ironic that I would probably pull the unit when it is warmer, but the it will be working.

transistors can heat up pretty quickly - or any piece of a power supply/converter. My money is that's what's going on.

It's a 20+ year old HU at this point. I'd just get a new one lol. Considering a decent single din can be had for roughly 100 bucks, I'd just swap it out.

Also, I doubt Modifry was a thing back then? If so you can get yourself a nice DCI to go with it if you don't already have one so you get your audio panel controls back!

Yeah, what he said. Not to mention, newer hu will have all sorts of technology that didn't exist back then.

Example, Bluetooth integration to stream from your phone or play from ipod etc. USB ports that can play music from device abd charge device.

Thanks all.

seems that it only craps out when really cold. Since I seldom drive it when it is that cold I am going to leave it alone for now. And even then after a few minutes it warms up enough so that the stereo turns on.

I am convinced ie is an internal issue since the units settings are not resetting, meaning power is getting to the unit.

Yes, it has a DCI, modify has been around for a long time. In fact I also have a Modifry bracket and have it he car hardwired for charging and auxiliary output.

thanks,

jim
