Nuvi 660
A couple of question RE: the Nuvi 660
1. There is usually more than one route that can be taken for each destination. After selecting your destination on the Nuvi 660, and youmake turns etc that cause your Nuvi to "recalculate", the next time you select this same route will your Nuvi 660 eventually route you via the route you have taken vs the one it selects for you?
2. Someone has given me written turn by turn directions for a route that is both scenic and twistie ...... Is there a way I can drive the route and have my Nuvi "remember" each turn and road so I may repeat it in the future?
3. I'm looking to eventually drive from Chicago to LA via what was formerly Rt66. The HistoricRt66 guys have come up with a GPS route ( http://www.travelbygps.com/guides/Route66/route66.php )but unfortunately it doesn't work for the Nuvi 660.... Anyone have any suggestions?
Maybe I just need to take a GPS 101 course (...or read the manual
)
Thanks ..

Have you tried out the Garmin website?
Might be able to find out more info on how to input your own route...
I know my 250W has a detour button, haven't tried using it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it lets me input a custom route - that might even be an option somewhere (I'd have to play with it and I don't have it here w/me)

I have the Nuvi 650 and it's the same system-wise as the 660. I highly doubt that the unit "learns" but it has been doing strange things since I have owned it.
I always go a specific way to my gf's house. It is different than the recommended route of the Nuvi. After 2 times doing my own route, the recommended route is now the same as my route every time I select my gf's home as my destination. Weird, eh?
For your question regarding "remembering certain turns", you are able to enter a certain number of intermediate points between your start point and your destination. My 650 only has 2 additional intermediate points. Not sure if the 660 has any more.
As for the above poster, the Detour feature allows you to exit the road you are currently on and get to your destination using another route. Great for avoiding traffic.

The Nuvi 660 doesn't learn and in order for me to plot a route in the local area, I drove it and shortly after turning onto a different road, I touched the screen and then save that point into my favorites ..... For FC 07, I ended up with 19 turning points (hence, I named them 1 through 19). When I begin my drive, I'll select destination "1" , when I aproach that point, I'll then select destination "2" etc .... Hopefully it'll work ....
Ken, I don't think any of the newer automotive units have a plotting capability and they don't "learn" the route being driven. I cannot recall the (Garmin) model numbers, but some of the earlier ones allowed you to plot out a course on a PC, then download that into the unit. I'm sure you don't want to purchase a more expensive aviation unit, but the GPS296 has Air/Auto/Marine modes... with this, you can create your own routes (which you can backtrack) by setting waypoints thus accomplishing what you want. BTW, setting up a succession of 'turning points' (routes) should also work... it's just much more work setting up what might be hundreds of these smaller routes all across the country; but even then, you cannot force it to take a particular road (it determines it, based upon the settings (i.e. avoidances, route preferences etc...)).

My 250W has waypoints. I'm not sure if there's a limit to how many waypoints though.
To set up waypoints, simply have the Garmin plot the course to your final destination. Then go back to the main menu and select to get directions. Put in the first waypoint, and then it will ask if you want to change destinations or add the new destination as a waypoint.
