Default OEM CD changer woes

hey everyone im having some OEM CD changed issues. Let me list the specifics of the car first.

2004
stock deck
stock 8 disc changer
custom trunk mount (really just sitting in the tool well all nice an snug)

from time to time the CD changer will error out and the deck wont recognize the changer anymore. when you scroll through the FM/AM/CD/AUX settings the changer input which is normally "CDC" wont come up and the changer wont start playing.

The changer seems to be working just fine, when i start the car/power it on it cycles through all the discs checking to see what slots are full and what are empty but it refuses to play.

I tried pluging and unplugging the changer into the rear harness a few times and nothing. i tried unplugging it, disconnecting the battery, letting it sit for a while and then plugging it back in and nothing.

any thoughts on this?

Easy solution, ditch the changer & OEM HU, go w/ a good aftermarket one w/ iPod/USB functionality. CD's are a PITA, I don't even like dealing w/ them any more.

It's rare for people to bother with the CD changer these days.
