OEM head unit issues
Hi all. I have a 2003 AP1. I believe my OEM head unit is not long for this world, wanted to see if anyone else has the problems Im having and also get some input on my next move.
My head unit no longer plays CDs. Seems like its trying to read the CD for a few seconds and then either (a) ejects the CD; (b) flashes "DISC" and does nothing; or (C) will display a track number and permit toggling, but then does nothing. On a few occasions, I actually got the CD to start playing, but only for about 15 seconds, then it just cuts out. Strangely, a few times the CD player has started to play music on a cold startup of the car, but it just cut out around 15 seconds. Radio works fine, clock has been dead for about a year (blinks the time, cant be reset), no other electrical issues I know of with the car.*
Anyone else encountered this? Anyone know if there is some magic album I can pop in to fix it all (already tried Dark Side of the Moon)
I am leaning towards getting a used OEM unit because I really want to keep the cockpit stock for sentimental reasons. Can anyone confirm that a unit from a MY2004+ will bolt right up in my 2003 AP1 without me having to get any new wiring harness, etc?
Is the backlight for all of the 04+ units orange like it is on my AP1?
Is it ridiculous for me to consider spending around 80-100 bucks on a used OEM unit, only to still have no aux input? Im also considering adding an auxiliary adapter if I get a new OEM unit....but spending that much seems even more silly for an OEM-based setup.
I really want to add an aux input, so I am also considering going the aftermarket route. But I really don't want to lose the left hand radio controls, so I would want an adaptor for that too and would be looking to spend 100-200 for everything.
Anyone have thoughts on a unit in the $100-150 dollar range that has orange backlight option and works with side control module adapters popular here on s2ki? I would like to have an aux input in the back of the unit so I can run a wire into the cargo net with the radio door closed. Looking for a no-frills, simple looking unit that I can close my radio door with. Don't care about power and don't plan on upgrading my speakers until I need to.
Thanks
*I just had some work done on the car including replacing spark plugs/valve adjustment and testing of some random misfire codes. I suspect they unplugged the battery and reset the ECU several times during this process as they were trouble shooting the misfire codes.

you could try cleaning the lens on the cd player with a lens cleaning cd. Or try power reseting everything by disconnecting both radio fuses or disconnecting the car battery for a minute. As far as retaining the hand controls you could check out modifry they will be able to help you out. Personally i think the oem headunit is outdated and doesn't suit my personal needs in a radio.
All years' headunits are plug & play compatible with all cars, though not all accessory
trunk-mounted CD changers are compatible with all headunits. This also likely means that
not all aftermarket iPod/aux interfaces are compatible with all OEM headunits.

The s2000 is the simplest vehicle to install and requires no dash kits.

Same thing happened to me. I have been listening to the radio for like 6 months now lol. I too would like to keep my interior OEM and have not been able to find an OEM unit for $50 since I cannot justify paying that much for an OEM unit. Aftermarket is extremely cheap these days.
Similar here. It would play the disc in the unit, but none of the controls would work. Radio was fine.
I found one of the locals who had an aftermarket unit and it cost me nothing to replace it. Ask around you local forum.
