Default Ok here it is.. a Super Simple DCI

-12F675 PIC microcontroller
-1K resistor
-10uf capacitor,
-78L05 regulator
-a jack plug and some cable...

is all you need to control a Alpine HU with your S2k dash buttons.
This mod doesn't use a IR led , just make sure your Alpine HU has an input for Alpine's dash control interface (KCE-865B), this mod uses this (jack plug) input.

I have added the extra featues like Skip forward/ back , seek forward/back.

feature list:

Press Button:_____Alpine HU:
CH_____________Band
MODE___________Source
VOL+___________ VOL+
VOL-____________VOL-
CH & Vol+________Preset Up
CH & Vol-_________Preset Dn
MODE & Vol+______Next/FF/Seek Up
MODE & Vol- ______Prev/FR/Seek Dn

(sorry for this awful looking table i have no clue how to format it)

So on top of the standard 4 functions, there are 4 extra features that can be selected by holding the "CH" or "Mode" button, and then pressing VOL+ or VOL- (thanks modifry for this great idea).

Yesterday i had still some problems getting it to recognize the right button, and fixing some other small bugs.. But all these problems were solved in the end.
I installed it last night in my car, just before a trip to Amsterdam. And I can say that it has never caused any problems whatsoever.

But I need a beta tester who can verify this as I have heard of problems with some other DCI's..

So PM me if you are interested in a free $5,- DCI ;-)

At the moment the Mute button is not operating yet. I will add this button in a few day's
Future plans are adding a JVC HU to this Super Simple DCI.

Pictures will be posted soon...

Michael

Great work on getting this operational, I might have to try interfacing to the hard-wired input on the Alpine too.

You might want to reconsider your price though. You can afford to give away (i.e. lose money) on a few of these, but what would you do if 20 people each sent you $5 tomorrow?

Or worse, what if somebody like Lucid ordered 100 of them? You'd spend every spare minute you had for the next month building "free" stuff. Just be careful.

Which alpine decks have this plug? And how come it seems to be available everywhere from north america? I plugged KCE-865B into google and all the hits were from Europe and Asia...

A plug on the back of the deck like this rather than hacking a remote seems much nicer!

Yes you are right, that was not really my intention, the price of $5 is roughly the parts cost price. Just to show that with a few components you can build such a thing.

At the moment i have no intention to sell these , and if i will, ofcourse the price will be higher.

If you need any tips for interfacing with the hard-wired input on Alpine HU's, let me know.
Just make sure that you send your IR data inversed over one of the 2 signal wires , ground the other wire. It took me about 3 hours of testing and trying before i figured that out.

Anyone (Modifry?) have any clue if the US equivalents for these HUs have the wired capability? I'm upgrading my stock HU soon and was planning to go Alpine (I have an older one in my CR-V that I love), probably the 9813 - if I could do something like this and hardwire the DCI I would much prefer that to an IR-emitter solution....

I looked into this a bit more and it seems that none of these head units have this feature here in north america.

This is very weird - why wouldn't they offer it here? I'd love to have this feature! It sounds like Alpine offers vehicle specific harnesses to integrate the steering wheel controls (on in s2k case: the dash controls).
