IMO using the Type E.. as an open air subwoofer... will sounnd really crappy... it can be done... but unless it has that sealed boxness to it... of even a vented enclousure... that sub needs something to bounce off of... otherwise... you'll wind up blowing the sub... due to too much travel... and there will be too much air movement in the trunk... i think it would be best to make a sealed box... or ported through the cabin... although this may cost more money... it'll be worth it...

See http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-06-Honda...sspagenameZWD1V

Or just search for "S2000 sub" on e-bay and look at the e-bay Motors listing.

Thanks. That was definitely a concern of mine as far as the extra travel goes and possibility of breaking the sub. Honestly, even though I want to be as budget conscious as possible, I'm avoiding a box more to save space than to save money. Perhaps some type of dampening setup on the speaker could reduce the travel in an open air setup and prevent the speaker from breaking, or I could find a speaker oriented for openair setup.

The idea to port the sub through to the cabin seems promising. I wonder if anyone's mounted a sub behind the seat, while creating some type of sealed area beneath the top tray. From what I remember there isn't any space to do something like that, but now I'm all giddy to go and take apart the back panels again to see if something might be possible. Though, if it already hasn't been done, then there's probably good reason.

Since it's my dd, going for a grocery run gets tight. It wouldn't be a problem if I could shop alone, but then I would only buy hot pockets and ramen and forget toilet paper. hehe.

Thanks, they actually look pretty good. I hate the fact that I lose the trunk well though. I'm still debating this compromise.

Does anyone know where those boxes mounted to the side can be procured at? Seems like darksidesubs.com isn't taking orders at the moment.

What sub did you put in that box and what amp drives it? Have you been able to compare it to anyone else's sub?

I have a 12" Alpine type R in it, sounds great. Driving it and type r components in the doors, with an Alpine pdx 4.100 amp.

Qts=.66 for that Alpine E Type....a little low for free air/infinite baffle, should really be in a sealed. That not to say you can't use it....

Actually was thinking that I should return/sell the Type E woofer and try my hand at a free air speaker. Are there any good recommended speakers for a free air setup?

Typical google free speakers doesn't give me much...

From what I've recently researched, it seems that a free air setup still requires the speakers front and back to be sealed away from each other. I don't really see an easy place to mount the speaker between the trunk and cabin border.

If you are still thinking about the tray......look for a speaker(s) with a Qts>.7

You could look at 4 6.5 inchers
