3/4 mdf is plenty.
I am planning to use lucid's door speaker adapters also... on his site the picture looks like it has a little bit of a built in spacer... think ill still need the spacer?

It works, the Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components in my sig are mounted using the stock speaker basket. I cut the basket part off, basically turning it into nothing more than a spacer. To protect the speaker from the elements I mounted it in a foam speaker basket. From inside out it goes: foam basket, stock mount with cutout, and then speaker.

That is true they will fit in the stock spacer if you cut the back off. I honestly wouldn't waste the money to buy a spacer. Just make it out of MDF or even better just cut the back off the plastic stock speaker basket.

Yup, agreed, just cut off the back of the basket, and keep the stock ring. Thats all you need.

I just installed my kappa perfects today. I have an 80wrms alpine amp thats i'm running them off of . I also have the stock headunit. The sound is a huge improvement. They sound great and the woofers handle bass really nicely. I'll most likely change the stock head unit soon. But for now I'm happy with the way they sound. Huge improvement over the stock speakers. Highway, top down, 90mph, I can hear my music and it sounds good

As for the install, I cut the back off the stock speaker basket and used it as a spacer.
