Default Portable GPS Mounting Area

Just got a late b-day gift yesterday, it was a Garmin Nuvi 360. I'm a gadget freak and loved the features (saved me from buying that new JVC 3.5" unit with a navi).

My problem is, where is it legal to mount this and where have you mount yours? Our windshield is only so big, and I found only limited areas that are not so obstructive. Thanks!

Modifry sells a mounting bracket that attaches to the right of the a/c controls:

I am thinking about a Nuvi, and am considering Garmin's portable friction mount for the dash, so I can move it between cars:

One of those portable bean-bag "friction" mounts came with the Garmin 2730 I use. It was USELESS in my S2000. Every time I went into a corner a little bit hot it slid around [usually until it fetched up on a pillar or fell off the dash.....the quick hands of my co-pilot usually saved it from falling to the floor]. I guess you could wedge it into a corner somehow if you really wanted to use it.

I ended up using what Garmin calls the "temporary" mount which has a removable "sticky" pad to attach it to the dash. I bought one for each car....... a sort of permanent/temporary solution.

hmm, that's not too encouraging. the reviews on amazon and elsewhere seem rather positive. granted, the 2730 is a bit bigger+heavier than the nuvi, but still...

how easily removable is the "sticky" pad?

I used Modifry's 3" bracket, but when I add my Nuvi 660, the bracket became a "slinky" ...... I think 1) I need a heavier gauge of metal or 2) I need to install a support bracket to the Modify bracket ..... or 3) I installed the bracket incorrectly ...... any ideas?

The best two places I've found for my garmin:

1) lower left corner of windshield. I use the suction cup to the windshield.

2) lower just to the left of center of the windshield, I still use the suction cup.

I think the center is best, the cord doesn't pass in front of the gauges that way.

Both work well, only block the view of the hood, are near the line of sight and the suction cup holds it steady.

I've only removed one once....just after I installed it ...... didn't like the placement. Since then [about 1-1/2 years] I haven't touched them.

It came off easily by twisting the mount and pulling sideways and up. There was just a tiny bit of residue left on the dash [sort of like soft chewing gum] but it cleaned up easily with 303 cleaner.

I considered using the "suction cup to the windshield" method but in order to reach the controls easily I thought I would have needed one with an extension and I thought the overhang with the unit mounted on the end would vibrate too much to suit me. And since I'm satisfied with what I've got I never pursued it.

I have the unit mounted just left of center on top of the dash and about an inch or so back from the edge.... It's positioned so I can see my radar detector which is mounted fairly low in the center of the windshield. The power cable is run to an auxiliary 12V socket I installed under the dash on passengers side.

i mounted my 350 to the center vent - any other locations obstructed my view somehow, which i didn't prefer at all. it clipped on via the following mount:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Car-Vent-Mount-for-GAR...1QQcmdZViewItem

i had to modify the mount, however, to reduce the depth of space that it took up. otherwise, it got in the way when you have your hand at the 2 o'clock position of the steering wheel. it has a ball socket to let the face rotate and angle, but i removed this ball socket, therefore giving adequate space for my hand to fit between the wheel and the 350. attaching and removing the mount from the vent takes only a few seconds. i don't have any pictures of it, but can take some if needed.

For that price, I might give it a shot.

Thanks for all the input guys!
