Has anyone actually run this without an amp, only an aftermarket headunit? I am getting an amp, but I'm curious if these are at least acceptable for a while w/o one.

From the PPI owner's manual. ".......the use of a low powered amplifier to try and attain very high speaker volume levels can lead to overdriving the amplifier and damaging the speaker system."

Having said that, I got my PPI speaker system installed this weekend and love the sound with my Alpine 9857, and Alpine MRP-450 70W RMS amp. I kept my Polk db 525 rear panel speakers. On the driver's door crossover, the old Polk had lost 2 of it's capacitors, I suspect from the heat of the summer and opening and closing the driver's door so much. My car is also on coilovers and a stiff ride. Anyway, for the price, I couldn't be happier. Much smoother than the Polk db 6500.

Hey I'm in the process of installing these speakers, and I need some help.

First of all what did you guys use to cut the back of the housing?? Lol I tried everything except electric tools which I don't have.

Second I'm having some trouble with the wiring. What am I supposed to do with the wire that hooked on to my oem tweeter with the adapter on the end? I'm not planning on using an adapter, and am going to run larger wires like somebody recommended. But I'm not sure how to do it. I tried following the diy guide from the forum but it kind of skips over it. Can someone that has done the install tell me how the wiring works with the big box of wires they provided?

Thankss.

i used wire cutters and a weird saw thing i found in my garage to cut the basket.

for the left over wire, just zip tie it or tuck away somewhere. it's no longer used if you're running larger gauge wires.

Do you think the stock wire is adequate for this speaker system pushing around 100rms per side? If possible I'd actually like to keep the stock wires.

I'm a nub when it comes to wiring so I have a few questions:
How do I connect the tweeter wire to the crossover? It doesn't reach. I'm not sure what the metal pieces on the end of the wires are for either. Also, how do I feed the wires to the crossover? Do I just shove it in and screw it down? It's probably a really obvious question but I haven't done it before lol.

And lastly, since I'm not running an adapter for the speaker wire coming out of my door, how do I attach it to my crossover input? Do I cut the adapter end?

Sorry for so many questions.

i'm not experienced enough to answer the first question, sorry.

you can either use the existing connectors provided by PPI and connect it to another wire which leads to the crossover. i did this plus butt-connected and heat shrunk the "extension" wire to my larger gauge speaker wire which i ran throughout the car.

to insert the wire to the crossover, simply strip a small piece of the insulation off, twist any fray wires, insert into crossover and screw down.

if you're running new speaker wire, plug one end into the respective speakers and fish the the line into the car to the crossover and insert into appropriate crossover slot. you will not be using any of the existing stock lines if you are replacing the wires.

Are you referring to the tweeter wire? So did you just cut off the metal tabs at the end of the ppi tweeter wire and extended that wire with the supplied speaker wires?

no, there should be supplied wires that hook up to the tabs. on the other end of the supplied wires should just be open-ended with nothing hooked-up. i butt-connected that end to my primary speaker wire that went into the car from the door.
