Default Proper Size Amp?

I am looking to purchase an amp to compliment my Alpine 9830 HU and Infinity Reference 6000cs. Currently, the sound distorts when I turn the volume up too far (I only need a little more clear volume to make me happy on the freeway with the top down).

I do not plan on rear speakers or a subwoofer in the future. What size amp would do. I am looking at the MTX Thunder 282 (RMS 70W x 2) as a think it would also fit under the driver's seat. Is this enough to give an increase to my system? ANy better ideas (I am on a budget and can get the MTX for under $100)?

Thanks!!

David

try crutchfield.com they have guides for these type of question. Such as what class of amps is better and how much power you really need etc...give it a shot.

I chatted with someone at Crutchfield and they said that as a rule, you want to push 70% or more of what the speakers can handle.

The amp pushes 70W and the speakers can handle 90W so I would seem to be good to go (77%).

i thought i was reading on here from some of the "experts" that it's better to over power them a little bit?

That is what I thought, too. I asked the guy at Crutchfield and that is when he gave me the 70% figure...

personally, i generally recommend buying an amp approximately in the range of 90% to 125% of the speaker's continuous rated power. there are a slew of arguments and conversations as to why you'd go higher vs lower... but 2 basic reasons are - you can always turn it down a little, and sound quality at lower volumes should be better as you're further from the amp's dynamic limits.

that puts you at amps outputing 80 Wrms to 120 Wrms per channel give or take.

Crutchfield isn't the cheapest place on earth, but they do offer great service and good selection.

given your budget, i'd be inclined to grab this one: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bC7JsNqocz8/c...200T&search=amp
it's a big high, but looks to be a nice amp.

throw in a coupon code to help out that price a bit.

crutchfield $10 off $50 plus Free shipping using Visa code: PA139
crutchfield $20 off $150 code: PA413
crutchfield $20 off $100 PA166
crutchfield $10 off $50 PA133

if you've never bought from them before, hit them w/ the referrer key: p0key-fprdu-ra8ec and you might get $20 more off.

best of luck.

if you want something mega cheap and are willing to take a modest risk Etronics often has nice amps, NIB, and relatively cheap.

i'm not the best guy for "finding the deal", but this should get you started.
