Proximity sensor problems, Viper?
I just got a viper 791 alarm installed last night, and everything is kosher, but we are having major problems getting the proximity sensor to pick up anything at all! I have to literally be inside the car for the alarm to even warn away. The sensor is turned up ALL the way. I have a 2000 model, and in the search I did, the general consensus is that a good location is under the e-brake/armrest. My installer said there is alot of metal in the area, and that is probably what is causing it. Anyone have a good place to put a prox sensor for MY 00-03? Or do you guys think it's a bad sensor?
Also, the installer can get my alarm to lock my driver door, but not unlock it. He says that he has to install an additional relay, because of the "odd wiring system" with my locks on my doors? I called up a good friend of mine, who is an installer in VA, and he called BS. Any insight? Thanks guys!
I'm with your friend on this one.
I'm thinking that the Viper model you have is a dual zone proximity type. Maybe the other adjuster needs to be played with. Does it beep at you when you get within a couple of feet from the side of the car? If the guy can't get the door to unlock, maybe he hasn't figured out that you have 2 adjusters on a dual zone system.

Well, what he told me is that the sensitivity is up all the way.. The weird thing is that the passenger door has no problems locking/unlocking? I am very confused, hopefully my friend and I can sort this out. Right now all I have is a complicated keyless entry!!!
Check this link http://darksidesubs.com/alarm/S2000ALARM.htm
It's instructions on installing a Hornet DEI alarm that WLAURENT used to sell (which I purchased from him). The Viper is made by DEI also, and the components should be similar. If you look about 90% of the way down the page in that link you'll notice it refers to the "Door lock learn routine" which should be outlined in your alarm's manual. I have a feeling this is what is needed to get your door locks working correctly.
The link also shows an alternate mounting location for the proximity sensor. I have mine mounted under the e-brake handle and the sensor works fine for me. I had to dial down the sensitivity a bit actually.
Anyway, hope the link helps some. It sounds like your installer is just missing some of these details.

Total bs, I have the same alarm as you with the same proximity sensor. The installer had no problems getting the doors to lock/unlock without any additional relays. They can also wire in the auxiliary output to pop the trunk if you want, since it has a built in actuator stock. My prox sensor is in the upper secret compartment. It works very well there, basically if you turn the sensitivity up ALL the way, the alarm will chirp if you get within 6 feet of the car (I have it adjusted much lower).
Yep - I would call BS also. The pink/blk stripe wire on the keyless module will lock the doors (- pulse) and the yellow/grn stripe will unlock both doors (- pulse).
I have installed a number of prox sensors under the armrests section and had little or no problem. You can also mount it in the first compartment of the secret compartment (sideways will work OK, but it is better to orient it with the front and back of the car).
Make sure they used a DEI (Viper/Hornet/Python/etc..) 508D dual zone prox sensor (same as shown in the link posted above by USACE). There are a few other prox sensors out there that are junk and they will hook right up to the DEI family alarms.

I have a Viper with the Proximity sensor. I did have the sensor under the armrest but moved it. I found it was too inconsistent there and in the summer the enclosed area gets really hot. I have it sitting in the glovebox now. Since the bottom of the box is angled, I bulit up the rear with thick velcro strips so that the sensor sits flat to slightly forward. No problems with it there.
My remote operates the doors and trunk fine.

Alright guys, just to update you all in case any of you were curious -
I took my car to my friend to have him check out the install. What he found were not up to best buy standards - the antenna was not visible, or on the glass like it was supposed to be, the wires were not connected properly. The viper 791 COMES with the shock sensor. What my installer did was disconnect the shock sensor, and simply plug the prox sensor into the port where the shock sensor is supposed to go. He said this will cause a malfunction, as the viper "brain" is looking for the shock sensor. The solution to this is to wire the prox sensor to the auxiliary input on the shock sensor (green wire). After he had it hooked up in this manner, not only did the shock sensor work, but the proximity sensor worked fine as well!! He, however, did also say that I would need an additional relay. The viper systems come with one in the box, and you can order additional ones, but some cars do not require any relays AT ALL, so they usually have extra for situations like this. Other than that, my SRS light is still on, but he said that I could either try to find a way to reset it, or file a damage claim and have the honda dealership take care of it. We will see. Just wanted to let you all know, thanks for all your help. Xviper, If you get banned, I refuse to buy a membership here.
